"When Gibson first started actually moving beyond "Weight Relieved" bodies to full-on chambering of the mahogany body under the Maple cap, there was a huge debate about this on all of the forums.

Putting more stock in how I personally feel about a particular guitar than I do in random forum chatter that is loaded with bias and sometimes even agenda (no offense intended to my forum friends, but we all know there's a lot of truth in that statement), I set out to put this guitar through its paces via my reference amplifiers.

My finding with this particular guitar was that is it less thick sounding overall than a solid mahogany slab Les Paul or even a weight relieved guitar, but......I like it due to it's increased clarity and versatility. The neck pickup in particular is infinitely more useable in a wider variety of situations and the bridge pickup is clearer and more articulate. I felt that the usual Les Paul qualities were there minus some of the neck pickup mud and a lot of the weight. For me personally......that's a good thing.

Make mine my preferred Gold Top and I'll take one!"

General Description

This instrument definitely has some Jazzmaster qualities due to the mildly underwound Fralin P-90's and body shape (yes, body shapes affect tone), but without the unuseable JM style tremolo and complicated switching/tone circuitry. Shimmery, open and complex with fantastic bloom and sustain that mirror the Jazzmaster's style tonally while an added low end girth nicely balances the frequency range. This particular guitar has a tremendous amount of history. This was the beginning of the Time Machine guitars being built with tweaks to the Relic work (no forearm wear, and finished removed from back of the neck), but more importantly, this guitar was the beginning of the 60's style Custom Shop, Time Machine guitars being offered with the more modern 9.5" fingerboard radius, larger neck profiles and the larger, non-vintage fretwire.

We asked Fender if they would build this for us, it was, essentially, an exclusive to my shop for a couple of years and then not only did most other Fender Custom Shop dealers catch on and start ordering them this way, but Fender started implementing this combination of vintage looks with modern playability across their entire range.

The success of this idea led to the head of Fender Custom Shop marketing flying in to Cary, NC to meet with us to discuss the concept further and to get our take on why this combination was working so well and had become so popular.

This guitar was the very first Fat Sound "One Off" and has been owned for the past 7 years by Fat Sound's own Mike Gallo.

It's an extremely special piece. History aside it simply sounds fantastic.

"One Off" is a bit of a misnomer since we do several of these guitars per year, but since Fat Sound was the first shop to come up with this idea this is what Fender named these guitars when we first started ordering them 10 years ago.

Limited run of reverse headstock '69 style, Custom Shop Stratocasters designed to give a similar look to the Hendrix Woodstock Strat with a more user friendly right-handed body for proper control placement.

The reverse headstock reverses the tension on the strings thereby changing the feel and tone of the guitar making it more Hendrix-ian in nature although the bridge pickup retains it's traditional right-handed slant versus the Hendrix reverse slant, but the specific sonic charcteristics of this can be changed if desired via the Fralin Woodstock Strat bridge pickup which was designed to give the tone of a reverse placed Strat pickup in a standard slant postioning.

A very cool piece with the Hendrix look without the difficult playability of the full upside down treatment of the earlier release "VooDoo Strat" which utilized a left-handed body as well. I owned one of the VooDoo Strats and believe me, operating the pickup selector and volume and tone controls is something you really have to work at unless it's your main or only guitar.

In 2000, Gibson took one of our favorite Les Paul model, The 1957 Historic Reissue Goldtop model or "R7" and had ex-Gibson Custom Shop finish master Tom Murphy age a limited run of guitars.

There are a couple of companies around today that do some mighty nice Les Paul aging, but Tom Murphy is the most highly revered and the only one actually associated with Gibson. A Murphy Historic is the only way to own a factory original, aged Gibson.

Over the years we've had a few "Murphy" Historics come through and I am always impressed with the degree of attention he gives to each of his master pieces.

What we have here is an extremely clean example of an all time great rock-n-roll machine from the heyday of Gibson.

This 1957 Les Paul Special is the most desirable singlecut variety in the most desirable color.........."TV Yellow" so named as it was designed to offer great contrast and "pop" when used during performances on black and white Television.

I have sold a ton of new and used Historic Les Pauls over the past 15 or so years, but this is easily one of the finest I have ever played. The tone is quite simply phenomenal. Girthy, creamy, thick........perfect. The neck shape is in the medium large camp and fits my hand like a glove. Historic necks come in a wide range of carves, but this is the best I have ever felt. This is, of course, a highly subjective area, but if you don't care for the extremes of the the slim taper necks or the small taper super large roundbacks this one may be as right for your hand as it is for mine.

If I was buying this guitar to play I'd probably replace the frets, but the frets are original and in fair condition so if you are considering purchasing this guitar primarily as an investment I'd say just leave it as is and enjoy playing it on an occasional basis.

Since its introduction in 1949, the Gibson ES-175 has been the most popular jazz guitar in the world. The 175 was Gibson's first model to be fitted with the humbucking pickup in 1957, and this single pickup version, highly prized by jazzers, was withdrawn in 1971. Since its inception over half a century ago, the classic ES-175 has remained in the Gibson catalog continuously to this day.

Responding to demand from traditional players, Gibson in 2006 released a small number of faithful reissues of the single pickup 175. Designated ES-175SP, the model has '57 Classic humbucking pickup, wriggle tailpiece and single ring tulip key tuners of the late 50's early-'60s guitars. This example is in immaculate 100% original condition, free of cracks, pick wear, thumb or fingerboard wear, with gleaming original sunburst finish. The fingerboard is the full 1 11/16" width, with a gentle medium 'C' neck profile that sits easily in the hand. The top and back show fine slab cut figure in the arched maple, and with excellent medium jumbo frets under bright nickel roundwound strings, the fingerboard is utterly effortless to play.

A rare and attractive example of the jazz player's most favored version of this classic model.

Setup

This instrument is strung with medium gauge nickel roundwound strings (.012-.054). The guitar will accommodate lighter or heavier gauge strings, according to preference. String action is set at 5/64" to 6/64" at the 12th fret, with moderate relief for acoustic playing with medium strings. The action may be lowered or raised to your requirements with the adjustable bridge.

Smokeburst nitro-lacquer finish is ultra thin. The burst toning is applied and then a very thin top coat of nitro-cellulose lacquer is added. These are the first PRS guitars to use this finish technique and like old Les Paul guitars the finish is already slightly sunken in to the grain even when brand new. Sadly, Vince called to speak with me in mid-February and told me to not take any more orders for his Artifact guitars. He's taking a "4 to 5 month creative Hiatus" and it is unclear what he will be building when he resumes operations. I got the impression that he was ready to move on from the "T" and "S" style guitars and begin a more unique and individual approach to the guitars that bear his name. I also got the sense that the aging process that he is famous for, having done the original "Cunetto Era" Relics for Fender in the mid-90's....guitars with iconic status in the marketplace....., is something with which he has become bored. There is still a high-demand for this type f guitar, but honestly, after 15 years of doing this who can blame him. No artist wants to, essentially, paint the same landscape over and over again; and Vince is a true artist.

This quite possibly means the end of the availability of some of the greatest "S" and "T" style guitar of our generation. Yes, there are many guys doing this type of guitar now, but very few have it down to the art form that Vince does and many are simply assembling parts guitars and calling them hand-made. Lightly distressed...."Under The Bed".....finish option with lacquer checking and mild hazing to the hardware with no dings, gouges etc.....The checking was essentially inpossible to capture under our studio flashes, but is brilliantly done and extremely correct in appearance.

Fat Sound's Take

This super cool, Italian built, Vox guitar would not normally be a guitar we'd recommend as a guitarist's only or primary guitar unless your name is Jack White. On its own it's a bit anemic with minimal sustain, due in part to the zero fret, but does manage to capture that mid-60's British Invasion tone nicely and the on-board effects work very well and make this guitar an incredible partner for musicians who like to create sonic landscapes. Perfect for layering unusual guitar tracks in a recording or ambient fill work in a live band. It's a total blast to play and a very cool looking piece in general. We dig it!"
