Fat Sound Guitars is both honored and privileged to be the exclusive, worldwide dealer for Ron Thorn's SoCal series of extreme custom guitars.

These masterpieces have previously only been available direct via Ron, but after several conversations, Ron and I came to the conclusion that we could make this a beneficial relationship for Fat Sound Guitars, Thorn Guitars and, most importantly, for our customers. The SoCal series guitars are also still available as custom orders directly via Ron.

As many guitarists will already know, Ron is one of the most brilliantly talented luthiers and inlay artists of the 21st century with a near fanatical following and many innovative, and/or proprietary features such as his "hidden fret ends", custom designed bridges, hand-wound, custom pickups and an innovative neck attachment method which features a dovetail, lap joint marrying body to neck in a manner that offers the best of bolt-on and glue-in construction.

Due to Thorn's low production numbers we have limited availability of roughly twelve pieces per year. Our offerings hit the website as soon as we receive them. We also list spec's for guitars that Ron is currently building for us and that are soon to arrive. All guitars will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Vital Stat's SN: R/S-035 Weight: 7 Pounds 7 Ounces Date of Completion: January 2011 Condition: Very Good (see notes below) Original Selling Price: $2950.00 Condition We're giving this Thorn a rating of Very Good due to an overall finish patina. While the frets show no wear and the guitar is free of dings, Ron Thorn's ultra-thin, nitrocellulose finish does show the general wear of a year of being played regularly. The gallery photos currently shown in this listing were taken when the guitar was brand new. Current photos will be posted the week of February 12th, but capturing the above mentioned finish aging might be difficult. Stu's Take In October 2010 I asked Ron to build one of his R/S models with my usual Alder/Rosewood spec's, but even though I use the tremolo bridges on my other guitars constantly I decided to take a chance and try the 2Tek hardtail bridge and let my Grosh Electrajet handle my tremolo work. I'd tried this tailpiece before on a previous R/S and really dug the sonic properties it contributed, but also felt my, frequently aggressive and heavy handed, Blues Rock syle with the occasional immense string bends might benefit from a rock solid bridge. I was drawn not only to the incredible playability and tone of Ron's R/S models, but also to his innovative dovetail neck joints which seem to increase stability, resonance and sustain and also to Ron's very trick "hidden fret ends" which not only presents an exceptionally clean look and that requires a special talent to achieve, but that also should eliminate any risk of "fret sprout" over time helping to ensure the fingerboard edges remain smooth and comfortable. It was very clear after playing the first R/S we received that Thorn was really moving the game forward rather than merely copying the old tried and true recipe. Every aspect of the guitars we were receiving from Ron was perfect, but at the same time they possessed a soul......nothing clinical or sterile about them whatsoever. I love the neck carve, am amazed by the resonance, string-to-string clarity and definition contributed by the 2Tek and find the overall sonic properties to be absolutely incredible. Overall, #35 possesses that absolutely essential and perfect compression, bloom and sustain (CBS), the perfect attack transient and single notes that are always full and pregnant in the frequency range in which I find this aspect to be critical to a great single coil equipped guitar. I also love the ultra-thin "Alloy" nitro finish and how it plays so nicely against the chrome of the 2Tek tailpiece. Each string saddle sits on its own individual “tonal finger”, which separates each string from the rest. The result is improved individual note articulation, especially in complex chords and playing techniques. This isolation also allows each string to vibrate for a greater length of time producing superior sustain. On a conventional bridge, all the saddles share the same bridge block or platform; as a consequence, when you strike a string the vibrations disperse in all directions. In fact, the adjacent saddles are typically in such close proximity that they allow vibrations to transmit to each another – often referred to as “crosstalk” – and this crosstalk is usually in conflict with the harmonic overtones of the originating string. Having said that.........there is an absolute obsessiveness to every aspect of Ron's guitars, every detail has been almost overthought to the point of extreme perfection. This psychosis reveals itself in the most beautifully designed and executed neck joint I've ever seen on a bolt on neck guitar, hidden fret ends which requires a tremendous amount of extra care when cutting the fret slots, ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer finishes without the need of "aging" to hide imperfections, custom design tremolos that work flawlessly and pickups that are simply fantastic.......the list goes on. And sonically we have yet to play a SoCal creation that didn't have unbelievable tone to go along with the build quality and aesthetics From the innovative and flawless construction to the goose bump inducing tone, Ron's guitars truly set the bar for this style of instrument. It is hard to believe that human hands are responsible for this creation.....flawless build and finish work. The fit and details are marvelously executed....I honestly don't know how it could have been done better! The color (which is fine metal flaked) is beautifully complemented by the chocolate rosewood neck and the understated black bakelite pickguard; very classy. This guitar is something that will really stand the test of time. It will never get that "what was I thinking" reaction as the years go by. The balance issue that I was concerned with is simply not an issue......! The guitar hangs perfectly....the rosewood neck is not a factor. BTW, overall...nice and comfortable, and also light. Also, the "natural " feel to the neck is great...I know that my son will be jealous of that. The carve is right on for what I like as well. Tone has not been fully tested....but just and initial clean test was nice and strong...different than the other Tele's that I have owned...not as thin. I'll have to get back to you with a tone report later....... I can go from the glassy round neck tone to gritty, nasty grease with a flick of the selector knob. Not the typical overly twangy, bridge pickup tone that I have expected from tele’s. The neck pickup has a wonderful 3D tone that I could play forever. I have to admit that based on a previous RW necked guitar that I've owned, I was a little concerned. Not just weight balance but about the tone. My last one almost sounded compressed....too mid focused. I changed pups and did all sorts of adjustments, but it couldn’t be dialed out. This guitar is very balanced both weight wise and tonally. This guitar will definitely be a player.....I’m going to bring it out to my next gig next week and give it a work out!" Joe K.
