MotorAve Guitars
Mark Fuqua was born and raised in Northern California. He, like many of his peers, picked up the guitar at a young age. He played in bands throughout his adolescence and young adulthood in Eugene Oregon and Seattle Washington. He was good with his hands and had some basic woodworking skills, but he had not translated that to the guitar until he started working for Chandler Industries in San Francisco, in 1990.
During Mark's two years with Chandler, he began his first guitar repair operation. He started freelancing for an infamous guitar store, Black Market Music, where he eventually worked for five years. The sheer volume of gear that passed through that store was an education in itself, and greatly influenced Mark's design aesthetic.
In 1998 Mark moved to Paris to work with James Trussart, whom he continued to build guitars for when he returned to the States. During the next few years Mark got married and spent a while in North Carolina, where he worked for Terry McInturff and refined and gained the skills that made Mark the master luthier that he is today.
Mark was still helping James Trussart on and off in 2002, when he opened his first MotorAve shop on Venice Blvd. in LA. At this point Mark was just doing a little work for JT. (Painting Trussart necks and Steeltop bodies/fabricating bridge support blocks and tension bars for the Bigsby on Trussart thinline guitars) But by the time the first BelAire rolled off the line, Mark and James had professionally parted ways. They still remain great friends.
Mark moved the shop to Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood CA and continued to slowly build MotorAve guitars while juggling an ever increasing repair business. In 2007 the decision was made to concentrate on building, and MotorAve guitars was relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where MotorAve Guitars are made today.

MotorAve Guitars are built one at a time, entirely by hand. All are pre-sold on completion so reservations are required. Current lead time is about 12 months. The above pictured guitar belongs to Fat Sound Guitars owner Stu Carter and is not for sale, but of course, we are accepting reservations for identical or similar guitars. Shown here in Nassau or "Corvette" Blue Metallic. The LeMans P-90 models remind me of a mid-50's Les Paul Junior in terms of the sonic qualities. Immensely fat, yet defined low end with huge punch and girth yet an ability to clean up nicely. These guitars actually sound 50 years old. Available in a variety of colors, neck carves etc... Since every MotorAve guitar is built by hand, by Mark Fuqua with no CNC work and lots and lots of hand cutting, sanding, metal work etc......each guitar takes about 30 days from start to finish and Mark only works on one guitar at a time. As a result lead times are literally getting longer by the day as we continue to take orders so call us toll free at 888-328-7686 or email me directly at Stu Carter to begin the process of spec'ing your guitar and reserving your spot in Mark's rapidly growing queue. About the Le Mans: This is a stripped down rock-n-roll machine with simply jaw-dropping tone. Lightweight, balanced, defined, meaty.....potentially aggressive with an incredible girth to the overdriven tones. It's truly phenomenal sounding, playing and looking. There are many color, bridge, pickup, etc.....options available. Base Price: $2850.00 A few option examples
The guitar comes standard in solid African Mahogany or Spanish Cedar with an East Indian Rosewood board, a single Lollar, Wolftone or Bareknuckle P-90 in the bridge and a Lightning Bar tailpiece. Pigtail style tailpiece also available as well as Mark Fuqua's ingenious Soft Stop tailpiece as featured here. Mark will also install the Tone Cut mod with switches, as seen on the control plate of the guitar above, for no additional charge. These work in series with the switch closest to the volume knob providing a very useable, mild top end cut, the second switch providing additional cut and the two combined rolling off quite a bit of top end for a woolier tone. Mark is also working on a three pickup models using the "Burns" style Adeson pickups in all three positions which based on the tone of the Adeson in the neck position should be fantastic! A little bit about the Adeson "Burns" style pickup: It also just looks really, really cool! Standard Features/Specs:
