Lance Lerman, owner and builder of LsL Guitars, has quickly developed a loyal, almost fanatical, following amongst the single coil guitar cognoscenti. Because of the incredible tone and playability of Lance's guitars and the fact that he's managed to keep them very reasonably priced.....the word has spread quickly.

At LsL Guitars there is no CNC work. All guitar bodies and necks are cut, carved and sanded by hand. Pickups are proprietary, handwound units with amazing vintage accuracy both in terms of looks and tone and even the pickguards are custom cut. No two are exactly alike, but they all sound amazing! The fretwork is fantastic and the tone extremely lively and balanced.

Vintage 7.25" radius fingerboards combined with modern 6105 fretwire results in fantastic playability all the way up the neck and is the perfect combination of vintage feel and modern playability.

10" radius fingerboards also available upon request or occasional store stock.

A truly authentic sounding and feeling guitar at an extremely good price-point for a hand-made instrument of this quality! Available in either lightweight Southern Swamp Ash (SA), Alder (AL) or Sugar Pine (SP) bodies and with Maple or Rosewood (RW) fingerboards.

Carl and Lance have teamed up to create one of the finest sounding, most soulful feeling guitars I've had the pleasure of playing. The neck carve is fantastic......seeming to disappear in my hand.......the new CV specific, LsL hand-wound pickups truly incredible and I really dug the warmth and overall vibe of Carolita's 'CV Blue' finish.

It's rare when this style guitar can effortlessly cover both the shimmery, swirly, percussive and bubbly cleans and the thick meaty 'Texas Tone', but this guitar does it. The two extremes of my favorite Fullerton tones in one fantastic playing guitar that felt, in my hands, as if I'd owned it for decades.

One Single Coil guitar that will cover the signature tones of Clapton, Stevie, Hendrix, Knopfler, Cray........?........sounds like total BS and as I type this I'm thinking "Oh Lord, they'll nail me to the Ultimate Salesman Tree for sure this time", but our first CV Special, Carolita, was that guitar. I just hope all of the CV models are this good.....if so.....I gotta have one.

[Update 8-19-2011] The four CV Specials that have arrived since I first wrote the review above have each lived up to this 'first impression' review.....without question. Consistency is looking very, very good!

These guitars are simply fantastic. They have such ring and clarity when you want a vintage spank yet morph into beefy, raw rock machines when that's your mood. The 7.25" vintage correct radius is offset in terms of playability by the high 6105 fretwire making these guitars effortless to play. Big bends are no problem even with a perfectly straight neck and, of course, the vintage radius makes for a great feel when playing open chords.

Other popular guitars in this price range are merely well assembled parts guitars. The LsL instruments are the Real Deal having been completely cut, carved, sanded, finished and assembled by hand by Lance S. Lerman......one at a time.

This is LsL new Black Paisley on Vintage Cream finish and we think it's a stunner! LiLu was ordered with very minimal aging on both the body and the neck. The body wood is Sugar Pine which is becoming highly sought after for both T-Bone and Saticoy models. The Sugar Pine imparts a wonderfully punchy, round and full sound with a bit less snap than Ash. It also seems to have more sustain based on the Sugar Pine based LsL guitars we've had so far. Another positive to the Sugar Pine is exceptionally low weight with most guitars coming in at 7 pounds or under without the sonic sacrifice that can accompany super light Ash guitars. This is a real ringer of a guitar and is Highly Recommended!!

We love this style of guitar in all black; it's the Johnny Cash of the electric world. This is one bad machine with amazingly accurate, 50's tone, modern playability and a fantastic feeling, satin finish on the neck with no fingerboard wear.....we'll leave that to you. The rolled fingerboard edges give Norma a nicely played-in feel and Lance's hand-wound pickups can cover anything from Classic or Modern Country, Chicago Blues, Pop Rock, Classic Rock, etc..... An extremely versatile, great playing and cool looking guitar!

Oh, this is a really good one! Incredibly light weight, but not neck heavy in the slightest. The bloom and sustain of this guitar are remarkable. Many notes simply sustain until you stop them.....even when playing a perfectly clean tone. That's a mark of exceptionally resonant wood working in sympathetic harmony with your amplifier. There's a sweet roundness to every note played. Great articulation and snap without being overly bright. The Gilmour look really completes the package making this a truly outstanding guitar both sonically and visually.

LsL Guitars in General

These guitars are simply fantastic. They have such ring and clarity when you want a vintage spank yet morph into beefy, raw rock machines when that's your mood. The 7.25" vintage correct radius is offset in terms of playability by the high 6105 fretwire making these guitars effortless to play. Big bends are no problem even with a perfectly straight neck and, of course, the vintage radius makes for a great feel when playing open chords.

Other popular guitars in this price range are merely well assembled parts guitars. The LsL instruments are the Real Deal having been completely cut, carved, sanded, finished and assembled by hand.

General

These guitars are simply fantastic. They have such ring and clarity when you want a vintage spank yet morph into beefy, raw rock machines when that's your mood. The 7.25" vintage correct radius is offset in terms of playability by the high 6105 fretwire making these guitars effortless to play. Big bends are no problem even with a perfectly straight neck and, of course, the vintage radius makes for a great feel when playing open chords.

Other popular guitars in this price range are merely well assembled parts guitars. The LsL instruments are the Real Deal having been completely cut, carved, sanded, finished and assembled by hand by Lance S. Lerman......one at a time.

"Man.....The LSLs are amazing Stu. The T-Bone, "Justine", sounds great, big but not too twangy (a great thing IMHO), comparable to a great Les Paul but a little more clarity obviously. Sounded great the other night through the Crema Wheat- another amazing tweed.

The LSL also sounded amazing with my 3 Monkeys and a 4x10 Matchless cab loaded with a quad of Dr. Z 10 inch speakers. Sounds great with the Germinos as well, especially the Lead 55LV."

"Stu,

As you may well know, I generally favor T style/SC style guitars to perform with. I prefer them to be constructed of swamp ash and maple, with vintage specs, but with some modernized appointments, like 6105 frets and a 9.5” radius. To stray from that combination of wood and various appointments is a bit out of character for me. I’ve known about sugar pine and its superb reputation for being similar to swamp ash, but being a creature of habit, buying a sugar pine guitar in a T style guitar is way out of my comfort zone. Thanks to your unbiased guidance, knowledge of the tonal properties of woods, and 99.9% accuracy in fulfilling my tonal needs, I definitely feel that I’ve made a significant decision choosing the SP T-bone. It’s definitely added a bit more color to my tonal palette while debunking the myth about pine being an inferior wood.

Having had the guitar in my possession for a while, I must say that I’m still mightily impressed and very excited to play this guitar every chance I get. The sugar pine is similar to ash but different at the same time. The sugar pine is light, resonant, and percussive. It rings like a bell and offers clean and aggressive tones with a little more clarity in note separation. The midrange is sweet, bouncy, soft, and mahogany like, while still delivering the bite and twang of a T style guitar. Pine is not a complete departure from ash but the tones are different enough to inspire my playing and creativity. I still love ash T style guitars but I’m very thrilled to have a sugar pine as a desired option.

The neck, which is one of the most important components of any guitar, is comfortable and just the right size. If feels like somebody played the guitar for a couple decades and handed it off for me to reap the rewards. The C neckshape has a medium/large feel and seems to have a subtle V from the 1st to 3rd position. The V is almost indiscernible but I believe it is perfect for grabbing and bending those notes close to the nut. Now the 71/4’ radius with 6105s? Forgettaboudit!  With the 7 1/4” radius, and Lance’s impeccable fretwork, there’s no problem with going sharp or getting hung up on single line runs. In all, the neckshape, the fretwork, the 71/4” radius, high angle of break over the saddles, the cut of the nut, culminate into one of the best damn guitars I’ve ever played! Playing and bending notes are a breeze and effortless. It definitely allows you to get lost in the moment rather than getting lost in the way that you’re playing.

Oh, and the pickups? They are terrific! I wouldn’t swap them for anything! They are perfect for this guitar! He certainly has his guitar building down to a feel which translates perfectly from a build to the finished product. It's almost hard to believe that Lance does this by hand rather than CNC! I’ll gladly lay down another $2 large for a true handmade guitar of this caliber.
