Grosh Custom

Proud to be the #1 Dealer for Grosh Guitars!

Given that Grosh Guitars has some truly exceptional dealers, we take great pride in being at the top of Don's dealer list for 2010!

Fat Sound is one of a select group of Premier Dealers for Don Grosh guitars. As an authorized Grosh dealer since 1997, we have seen Don continue to, not only build what we consider to be among the most soulful of the Modern, Boutique Strat and Tele style guitars, but also to design new models that are extraordinary and unique instruments such as his SetNeck and our best selling Electrajet series.

"The Electrajet series, launched in 2008, quickly became one of our all time best selling models and a guitar I personally rank as among one of the best guitars ever created. I own two of them so far........and have a third on order. You could say I'm an Electrajet Junkie!"

-Stu Carter, owner, Fat Sound Guitars

While we keep dozens of Grosh guitar on order at all times and usually have several in stock from which to choose, we can also special order anything you desire with an average turnaround time of about 12-14 weeks

Don Grosh designs every guitar from the "ground up" as a unique "complete-in-itself" instrument. Don utilizes state-of-the-art building techniques, combined with the best tone woods available and nitrocellulose lacquer finish. All of this adds up to an incredible looking, playing, sounding, and acoustically alive instrument. Unlike many of the small custom builders in the market place, Don Grosh has managed to combine extremely high quality of construction with an organic feel unmatched by any of his contemporaries. You'll find nothing clinical or sterile here. Excellent quality of construction, attention to detail and the best feeling, most toneful guitars of their kind on the market along with some truly phenomenal original designs.

[NEWS 4-23-2010] Grosh Guitars is pleased to announce the addition of Mark Knopfler as an official endorser of the Electrajet model which he has been using in the studio and now on tour. Congrats to Don for designing a new instrument worthy of one of the all time greats!

Dual Humbucker EJ #2808

We think this is an incredibly hot looking guitar. Don's choice of the Brushed Aluma-Look pickguard and black painted headstock really tie this guitar together visually. Unfortunately our photos just don't quite do this one justice. They should give you an idea, but its a jaw-dropper in person.

The Small Block Humbucker set is one of our all time favorites with a PAF style wind, tons of clarity and definition and a superb ability to clean up with volume roll off.

This is one amazing instrument!

The Electrajet

The Electrajet models are some of the best guitars we have ever played. A truly amazing, toneful and inspirational guitar design in every respect by which an electric guitar is measured. Fat Sound's owner has three of them (dual P-90, dual Mini-Humbucker and Sunset '79) in his personal collection and Fat Sound's manager (also guitarist for The Connell's) uses a dual P-90 version as his main stage and recording guitar. The variations you can come up with are nearly endless and the body shape somehow contributes to making these guitars more versatile than anything else we can remember having played regardless of the pickup configuration.

Of special note for players who like to actually use their guitar's tremolo, this latest "510" design from Gotoh combined with Grosh's nut work and overall alignment and flawless build geometry allows for either subtle, smooth vibrato or complete dive bombs while remaining perfectly in tune 95% of the time. A string or two may occasionally go out a tad under extreme use, but a quick wiggle of the bar almost always brings it right back in tune again. As much as we love the Sunset 79 variant with the Floyd Rose, it is also nice having a truly useable, non-locking tremolo option for the player who prefers the more traditional look and/or tone that this style of tremolo brings to the table.

The Gotoh 510 is a vintage style, 6 screw attachment, 6 bent metal saddle tremolo with a modern upgrade via its compression fit trem bar which is easily adjustable to either stay where you put it or fall out of the way when released. It's the best vintage inspired tremolo we have ever come across.

Fat Sound's Take

What a fantastic guitar! I love how pure rock-n-roll this guitar can be with infinite sustain bleeding over from one chord or note to the next while still maintaining a mid-tone that is very woody, rich and mature sounding. Testament to many things, but partly due to the marrying of the perfect pickup set to the correct wood type and body shape.

The name of the model evokes the release year of the second Van Halen album and that first photo we all remember seeing on the back of that album cover with Eddie playing a hot-rodded F style guitar (The "Bumblebee") in black and yellow finish as well as Sunset Sound studios where VH2 was recorded in just 10 days under the production genius of Ted Templeman. This was the origin of a style of music and an exciting new style of guitar playing that would ultimately shape nearly 2 decades of rock-n-roll and from which new forms of hard rock and heavy metal would be given rise.

This is one amazingly fun guitar to play and everything about its tone, fit & finish as well as its overall flawless playability screams best-of-the-best. The new Grosh Sunset 79 is the ultimate example of the style of guitar from a time when hot-rodders like Eddie, Floyd and Wayne picked up where Leo left off and began modifying their guitars and creating new types of tremolos to make 'em go faster, drive amps harder and stay in tune under even intense tremolo work!

Sonically it reminds be quite a bit of my all-time favorite humbucker/Floyd guitars which were the early Charvels built until about 1984 and the MusicMan EVH models from the early to mid 90's; both of which command a high price tag in the used market when in excellent, unmolested condition and both nearly impossible to find in the condition they would need to be in for me to buy one.

This new neck carve is just perfect. It has a *hint* of That Era to it, but has clearly been modernized by Don to fill out the hand much better with deeper shoulders (modified D .820" / .920") and with no sharp fingerboard edges. You can still play extremely fast if you wish, but your hand is more relaxed and comfortable due to its more medium size overall versus the ruler thin pieces of wood that passed for necks in the 80's. And with it's excellent coil tapping abilities you could easily use this one guitar for an entire cover band gig.

Essentially this guitar represents the evolution of this style of guitar based on everything that master luthiers like Grosh have learned about pickups, neck carves, etc......since Floyd equipped, rock-n-roll machines first started coming out of San Dimas during their development and evolution between the mid to late 70's.

As with all Grosh guitars, the fretwork is perfection itself with beautifully rounded over fret edges and somehow Grosh Guitars manages to do this detail work without the fret files ever touching the wood around the fret ends to leave tiny scarring in the wood. See photo #4 above for a close-up look at this fretwork. Only the top fret guys in the country can accomplish this. It's an aesthetic touch, but a nice one.

While I have certainly morphed backwards if you will from the shredder I was in the 80's into the Blues Rock and Classic Rock player I am today, I've still dreamt of owning one of the early Charvels that were priced beyond my reach at the time and have regretted not keeping just one of the four MusicMan EVH guitars I owned. This new model from Grosh Guitars scratches that itch perfectly because it accomplishes those tones, exceeds them really, and exudes that same kind of vibe in a guitar that is all-around better and more versatile and without the ultra-slim neck that most of us have outgrown as well as learned is not at all ergonomically conducive to the more open-hand style that helps prevent cramping or, worse, carpal tunnel syndrome.

Simply put, the new "Sunset 79" is ultra-sexy, truly inspiring to play and possesses an incredible versatility that will most likely surprise you.

I'd like to give a shout out to Grosh's Bobby Smith who had more than just a little to do with the ultimate design of this guitar. You can hear some of Bobby's amazing guitar playing via the YouTube link below as he runs his earliest version of what would ultimately become the Sunset 79 through a cranked Germino Headroom 100 head and vintage Marshall cabinet. This guitar definitely excels at styles other than Bobby's, but his playing certainly showcases what the guitar is capable of for the Hard Rock lead guitar players.

Fat Sound's Take - The NOS Retro - New Model for 2012 - Full-Size 60's Body Carve - Traditional Routing

With the release of his NOS Retro model, Don Grosh offers, for the first time, 50's and 60's style double cut, bolt-on neck guitars with period correct, full sized bodies as well as "traditional" under-pickguard channel routing. While Don's more modern, scaled down Retro Classic S has become an instantly recognizable icon of the modern, boutique guitar genre, the NOS Retro offers players, like me, who prefer this style of guitar as originally spec'd by Leo in 1954, a new, purely traditional alternative. The NOS Retro's headstock is also a new, larger version of the original Grosh design giving the NOS a nice visual balance. The new headstock design includes an updated "Grosh" logo as well. For this new model, Grosh has dropped his first name from the logo and chosen a larger, bolder font.

The NOS Retro represents more than just a larger Retro Classic S; it's an entirely new Grosh design end-to-end. We think it works exceedingly well. The Ice Blue Metallic NOS featured in this listing is one of the most beautiful guitars of this style that we've ever seen. During the play testing phase leading up to this review NOS Retro #2801 set-up effortlessly to my personal preferences which include higher action and slightly more neck relief than factory spec' and with enough float dialed into the tremolo to allow for actual vibrato and a float range on the sharp side that has the tremolo it the body exactly one half-step sharp of the fretted note.

It played flawlessly while possessing that big, acoustic resonance that you feel in your chest and that instantly tells you the guitar has promise before ever plugging in. I was also pleased to hear zero fret rattle, even in the 5th to 7th fret territory, often a problem area for 25-1/2" scale guitars. The intonation was as perfect as you'll find on a non-temper-tuned instrument and its tuning stability proved exceptional. During my two day test of this guitar, the Gotoh 510 tremolo was used extensively for subtle vibrato as well as deep dives and swells. Even under this kind of heavy use, not once did the guitar go out of tune due to heavy-handed tremolo antics.

Featuring Don's intuitive ability to choose the right wood to consistently create lively, resonant instruments that breath, ring and sustain will fullness and bloom, even when strummed acoustically, his always perfect and beautifully finished fretwork, his ability to shoot pure, true-vintage nitrocellulose lacquer without the need to age his guitars to hide drips, runs or bubbles combined with his own hand-wound range of pre-CBS style Single Coil pickups which, like his P-90 and humbucker sets, are being raved about by players everywhere, Grosh's new NOS Retro isn't just another nut down copy cat guitar. In fact, with Bill Callaham, one of my all-time favorite builders of this style of guitar, no longer taking orders due to the ever growing, much deserved success of his parts business, we feel Don has unintentionally stepped up to fill the void left behind by Callaham in this segment of the market. Other than the name on the headstock and Don's preference for the Gotoh 510 Vibrato, This NOS Retro rivaled the best Callaham guitars I've played. And that's saying something considering Bill is known for his efforts at perfecting this style of guitar to the point where, even when new, his instruments, like Don's NOS Retro, sound as close to a particularly great, 50 year old guitars as you'll find (and both actually tend to play better).

Retro tone, Retro looks, Consistently exceptional wood selection and build quality, one of our top two favorite vintage-style Tremolos and even a redesigned headstock and logo. The new NOS Retro series from Don Grosh is something to truly get excited about!

We hope that Bill Callaham starts taking orders and building guitars again someday because we feel there can never be too many choices at this level, but whether he does or doesn't, thankfully Grosh Guitars now offers a similarly amazing, full-sized body, traditional route guitar. And you better believe we're ecstatic.......yes the guitars are incredible, but adding to my enthusiasm is the fact that I've personally been nagging Don to build this guitar for at least 10 years.

Thanks Don!!

Stu's New Guitar

I had to keep this one for myself. I've been one the Electrajet's most outspoken advocates and biggest fans for several years and own both the P-90 version and one of the Sunset '79 models (I also have one of the new NOS Retro models on order which means I've officially become a collect-the-whole-set Grosh player), but since this guitar arrived a couple of weeks ago I've spent tons of time with it and have found myself reaching for it every chance I get! I'm amazed by Don's new Mini Humbuckers and what they bring to the EJ. This is one of the finest guitars I've ever played. I find it extremely versatile, absolutely brilliant sounding, and highly inspirational. All-in-all it just fits me like a glove on every level that matter to me as both a guitarist and gear freak.

Anticipating very high demand for this model, I've ordered several more mini humbucker equipped Electrajets which are available to reserve (see bottom of this listing). Next to arrive will be a batch of Electrajets with the same wood complement, neck spec's, Aluma-Look pickguard, etc... as mine. Color available to reserve include Ice Blue Metallic (as seen in the listing for the new NOS Retro model), Black Orange Metallic, Black Cherry Metallic, Black Mini Sparkle and the same Sherwood Green Metallic as my guitar.

If you'd like to speak with me about this mode, please feel free to email me anytime or to call me at the shop during business hours.

The Electrajet Mini-Humbucker

With the Electrajet model, Don Grosh hit on a recipe that seems to take any pickup configuration you can think of and make it magical. We've sold tons of the most popular Dual P-90 versions, several of the "VT" versions with traditional 50's Fullerton, single-cut style 3-brass saddle bridge and dual single coils, the dual humbucker version is very popular (it doesn't hurt that Grosh's Blown '59 and Small Block Humbuckers are some of the best kept secrets in the industry). We've done fantastic sounding Electrajets spec'd with TV Jones Filtertrons as well as a trio of Lollar's Charlie Christian pickups. There's also the hot-rod, Sunset '79 with its rear-loaded humbucker and locking Floyd Rose design.

Electrajet #2798, a NAMM 2012 Showpiece guitar, has convinced us that the dual Mini-Humbucker variant will, in 2012, become as immensely popular as the #1 selling P-90 version. The "EJ" equipped with Don's Mini Hum's offers a very impressive range of tones while covering just about every genre of music we hold dear. With more classic humbucker midrange growl than a P-90, but better clarity and definition than a full-sized humbucker and tapped tones that actually work, this is the model for any player who needs the low noise level of humbuckers, but also the versatility to cover just about any style of music without compromise. Versus full sized PAF-style humbuckers, Don's Electrajet Mini-Humbuckers never get smeary or muddled. We still love the P-90, Dual Humbucker and several other variations of the Electrajet, but are currently pretty blown away by this Mini Humbucker equipped model.

Fat Sound's Take On The Electrajet

[Reservation Option] Anyone who follows the comings and goings of Grosh Guitars on our website knows that the most in-demand models/spec's/colors are pre-sold on arrival the vast majority of the time. We anticipate Don's new mini-humbucker version of our best selling Electrajet model to quickly become a very difficult guitar to keep in stock therefore we've made reservations available via the Add to Cart button above. This feature allows you to reserve the next available Electrajet Dual Mini-Humbucker model with the same spec's as the guitar in this listing via a, fully refundable 20% ($640.00) deposit. Essentially you are reserving the first right's of refusal. The same day the guitar that you've reserved arrives at our shop you'll receive an email with several photos to look over and then have the option of having the shop's owner play test your reserved guitar and call you within 24 hours with a complete analysis and to answer any questions.

Typical lead time for new orders is 14-16 weeks. By reserving an Electrajet Dual-Mini that we already have on order (see listing below) your wait can be dramatically reduced. You'll receive your guitar much sooner versus placing a "from scratch" order.

We have Electrajet Mini-Humbukcer models on order with the same, primary, spec's as the guitar in this listing in a variety of colors (See list below) and with both the Medium-Large neck carve (our best seller) as well as the Medium neck carve (Don's overall best seller).

When placing a reservation, simply make note of your preferred color and neck carve in the "Notes to Merchant" section at checkout.

Fat Sound's Take

Our Electrajet '79 spec's are a blend of those found on the incredibly popular Electrajet Dual Humbucker and Sunset '79 Models. Combining the fantastic "Modified D" neck carve, slightly flatter fingerboard radius and Blown '59 humbucker pickups of the Sunset '79 with the top loaded pickup design and non-locking, vintage style Gotoh 510 tremolo of the Electrajet, results in a fantastic melding of our favorite qualities of the dual humbucker Electrajet and Sunset '79 models.

Grosh's hand-wound Blown '59 set is so incredibly well designed that they are equally perfect for driving an amp into thick, meaty hard rock territory or for creating lush, complex cleans. Easily one of the best humbucker sets we've experienced and while well-suited to the genre, are definitely not just for harder rock.

The overall vintage spec's of Gotoh's fantastic 510 tremolo combined with its acclaimed tuning stability and compression fit tremolo arm allows for wonderfully ethereal, ambient vibrato as well as extreme swells and dives while retaining a more vintage leaning sonic signature.

There seems to be no end to cool ways we can spec' an Electrajet and our "Electrajet '79", with its best of all worlds versatility, is one of the baddest Electrajets we've come up with yet!

Highly Recommended!!

Fat Sound's Take On The Electrajet In General

The Electrajet models are some of the best guitars we have ever played. Both Fat Sound Guitar's owner and manager count Electrajet models among their most prized guitars. A truly amazing, toneful and inspirational guitar design in every respect by which an electric guitar is measured.

Fat Sound's Take On The Electrajet

The Electrajet models are some of the best guitars we have ever played. A truly amazing, toneful and inspirational guitar design in every respect by which an electric guitar is measured. Fat Sound's owner has two of them (a dual humbucker and a dual P-90) in his personal collection and Fat Sound's manager (also guitarist for The Connell's) uses a dual P-90 version as his main stage and recording guitar.

The Filterjet

The latest version of the Grosh Electrajet is one we've coined the 'Filterjet". One of our customers in the UK ordered an Eectrajet in early 2011 with a trio of TV Jones Filtertron style pickups and we flipped over its overall tone and versatility. He was quite pleased with it as well! With a TV Jones Powertron in the bridge position and the TV Jones Classic in the neck and middle positions, the Filtertron provides the versatility of a Strat via its 5-way switch (there's also a push-pull tone pot to add the neck or bridge pickup to any setting where it's not already active), the clarity and definition of the classic Filtertron pickups, the low noise of humbuckers and a bit of the punch of P-90's.

Fat Sound's Take on #2566

After spending close to an hour playing this Electrajet through my '71 Marshall JMP-50, Dr Z Z-Wreck head and 212 cab and a Germino Classic 45 LoVo I can say that EJ #2566 is up there with the best sounding guitars I've played. I already love the Electrajet in general and use one as my primary guitar. I also am a huge fan of Don's humbuckers. I dig both his Smallblock set and his Blown '59 set. The Blown '59 set works great for me since I tend to use lower gain amplifiers and the "push" of these slightly-hotter-than-vintage, PAF style pickups (Alnico II @ 9.3K neck and 11.5K bridge) work just right with my amps. Even though they do a great job of driving my amps into smooth overdrive they also clean up beautifully by rolling back the guitar's volume control and offer very clear and defined tones when tapped via the guitar's push-pull tone control.

The Medium-Large Roundback profile also happens to be one of my two favorite of Grosh's neck carves (the Modified D of the Sunset '79 model being the other) and the proprietary oil finish just feels fantastic. I'll be playing much more of this guitar between now and the time it sells, but promise to take good care of it for its next owner!

I love this piece and Highly Recommend it!

-Stu Carter, owner Fat Sound Guitars

Fat Sound's Take On #2540

Electrajet #2540 is loaded with Don's hand-wound Blown '59 Humbucker set which is a fantastically versatile set of pickups with a bit more heat than your typical vintage set at about 9K at the neck and just under 11K at the bridge. This higher-than-vintage-PAF output works very well with the Alder body, Maple/Madagascar neck and 25.5" scale length. The combination allows for an almost infinite variety of humbucker tones from cleaner and more shimmery than a PAF loaded Les Paul, to Classic Rock crunch, to rounded, singing overdrive and ultimately both Classic and Modern Hard Rock. The humbucker's are mounted in a unique, single-ply, matte black pickguard which is then further accented by all black screws; a subtle approach to spec'ing out a very cool version of the Electrajet model.

The Two-Tone Madagascar fretboard furthers adds uniqueness and beauty to this piece and is nicely accented by the Abalone dot inlays. The German made Jescar stainless steel fretwire, sized similarly to Dunlop's 6100, allows for effortless playability over the 12" fingerboard radius.

A great playing, beautiful and very versatile guitar!

Prop's should be given to Fat Sound customer and friend David R. for dreaming up the overall aesthetics of this guitar, a look we will surely repeat with future store stock orders.

Highly Recommended!!!™

Fat Sound's Take On The Electrajet In General

The Electrajet models are some of the best guitars we have ever played. Both Fat Sound Guitar's owner and manager count Electrajet models among their most prized guitars. A truly amazing, toneful and inspirational guitar design in every respect by which an electric guitar is measured.

About Don's Optional, Black Base Coat, Color Process

In 2009 Don Grosh developed a new Black Base Coat technique that has opened a whole new door on color possibilities. As seen in the finish of this guitar, this new process creates an extremely deep, lustrous finish that has an incredible richness and dimension to it. The color shifts subtly with movement giving it one of the richest looks we've ever seen on a guitar finish.

Utilized here in under Cherry Metallic to create a deeper, slightly darker color with more movement. The photos do a pretty good job of capturing the beauty of this color, but wait until you see it in person!

Fat Sound's Take

If you take everything that makes a Telecaster style guitar great and add a thickness and a complex meatiness due to the extended lower horn of the Grosh Electrajet body shape while simultaneously increasing the top end shimmer and complexity you end up with a guitar that's essentially a Telecaster on steroids and with greater versatiity. The new Grosh Electrajet VT takes everything we love about the Electrajet and adds everything we love about a great Telecaster to come up with something amazingly special and almost wholly new while definitely very familiar..

It's incredible how changing the body shape can have such a profound impact on a guitar, but the Electrajet VT, as with the other Electrajet models that we tout so highly, proves that there really is room to take a tried and true Classic, tweak it a bit and come up with a new sound that has a familiarity that will strike an inspirational chord with both Tele players as well as players who are looking for something unique, new and exciting!

One of only 5 Electrajet Baritone models to be built as a limited edition run. Ours is #3 of 5 and is finished in a gorgeous '59 Burst nitrocellulose lacquer with Tortoise guard and TV Jones Magnatone pickups.

Fat Sound's Take

There are few guitars that are more fun to play or that will help break you out of a rut the way a great Baritone will. They're simply fantastic for coming up with new music or for layering in recordings. Now, the ultimate baritone is on offer in a limited batch of 5 guitars. Don Grosh has taken one of our all time favorite guitars, the Electrajet, and stretched it into a B-B Baritone. This is about as cool as it gets!

Fat Sound's Take

There are only a handful of master luthier's alive today capable of designing and building such an absolutely perfect instrument. The Grosh Hollowtron is a brilliantly designed and flawlessly built guitar with some absolutely amazing tones. Notes bloom at the precise moment you want them to with incredible sustain and complex harmonics. The action can be set super low without buzz if that's your preference. The Bigsby can be used aggressively while remaining in tune.

The binding, F-hole, bullseye inlays.....all flawless.

This is one serious instrument with sonic properties similar to those of a vintage Gretsch, but capable of also being a bit thicker, meatier and more solid overall.

One of the most astounding guitars we've ever offered.
