Here is what is special about the "One Off" Custom Shop guitars offered by Fat Sound:
"We start with the, already pretty great, Time Machine guitars from the Fender Custom Shop and then tweak the spec's to make them.....better....plain and simple. Fat Sound Guitars started doing this way back before Fender even offered their current ala carte Team Built menu that allows for tweaking many aspects of the Time Machine guitars. At the time, we were the only shop doing this.
Not completely satisfied with the pure-vintage neck spec's of the standard Time Machine guitars, I decided to order "One-Off" variants with slightly tweaked spec's. My goal was to make the necks more playable and at the same time tweak the relic'ing process etc...to offer a guitar that to my eye looks a bit more like the real Pre-CBS guitars that have come through the shop since we opened in '93.
Over the years, other shops and even Fender have picked up on the increased desirability of our vintage styled guitars with custom ordered neck carves, tweaks to the aging process, modern radius and fretwire, but Fat Sound was the first shop to bring this combination to the guitar playing public via our Fender "One Off" Custom Shop guitars which first hit the market in the late 90's"

Fender builds these guitars for my shop with the following changes from standard spec:
- 9.5-12" radius fretboard: These slightly flatter radii gives the guitar more modern playability for big bends and lead work without sacrificing the easy chording of the more rounded vintage radius; especially in the case of the 9.5" which we think of as the "happy medium" radius.
- Dunlop 6100. 6105 or 6150 fretwire: I only know a handful of players that actually prefer the really small vintage fretwire that comes standard on all 50's and 60's Custom Shop guitars! Therefore we have had Fender fret our guitars with larger Dunlop wire for much better leverage while bending strings. The combination of the flatter radius mentioned above and the larger fretwire makes the Time Machine guitar you purchase from Fat Sound infinitely more playable than the stock version.
- No Forearm wear: Basically this simply eliminates the, frequently, artificial looking forearm wear that you typically find on "off the shelf" Relic models thereby giving the guitar a more authentic look. The exception to this is our Extreme Relic series where eliminating the forearm wear would look odd. In the case of these guitars we have Fender spend a little extra time getting the wear to look as correct as possible and with a little play the continued wear in this area becomes very natural looking.
We also do plenty of NOS and Closet Classic guitars for those who don't like the Relic look.

The reverse headstock reverses the tension on the strings thereby changing the feel and tone of the guitar making it more Hendrix-ian in nature although the bridge pickup retains it's traditional right-handed slant versus the Hendrix reverse slant, but this can be changed if desired via the Fralin Woodstock Strat bridge pickup which was specifically designed to give the tone of a reverse placed Strat pickup in a standard slant postioning. A very cool piece with the Hendrix look without the difficult playability of the full upside down treatment of the earlier release "VooDoo Strat" which utilized a left-handed body as well. "One Off" is a bit of a misnomer since we do several of these guitars per year, but since Fat Sound was the first shop to come up with this idea this is what Fender named these guitars when we first started ordering them 10 years ago. We keep this model, with the spec's listed below, on order at all times and receive about 30 per year, but.......we were the first to come up with the idea of using a modern radius (9.5") and fretwire (Dunlop 6105 or 6100) on a Time Machine model as well as the first to tweak the Relic'ing process and neck size spec' a bit to offer a more authentic looking guitar and therefore we are well known for these instruments. This means that we have a very tough time keeping them in stock. Reservations are suggested as they do tend to be sold on arrival. Because of our ordering schedule your wait is reduced from the typical 11 months that it takes to receive a Relic Custom Shop after being initially ordered to b/w 2-4 months depending on where Fender is in the build process of the guitar you reserve. A 20% reservation deposit is refundable, we send you photo's of the guitar you have reserved along with an unbiased tone report once it arrives and you decide at that time whether to complete the deal, wait for the next one or to have your deposit refunded in full. Once you receive the guitar you still have our standard, 72 hour approval period. If you don't love the guitar for any reason you can return it for a full refund......no questions asked! These are typically fantastic guitars. The combination of a truly Vintage looking Strat with our larger neck (the standard 60's Strat Time Machine necks tend to be pretty thin) and our modern radius and fretwire make for a perfect Stratocaster.
