Taking a page from the Book of Greats, Collings builds the 290 DC S model, their most bare bones, yet possibly most impressive, solid body electric model to date.......if you're looking for an ultimate Classic Rock and Blues guitar that is.

The 290 DC S is The Definitive, archetype Rock-n-Roll guitar in every respect. A single, dogear P-90 courtesy of Jason Lollar, gorgeously massaged Mahogany from Honduras, the flawless neck carve and overall fit and finish for which Collings is legendary all complemented by and leant a degree of versatility due to our Bigsby B5 tailpiece spec. The DC S with Wraparound hardtail bridge is fantastic, but this model with the Bigsby tailpiece is leant an entirely new vocabulary thereby maximizing the versatility of the simple, single pickup design.

Fat Sound's staff consists of players who are more of the ham-fisted, big string gauge, extra heavy plectrum, agro types who like a guitar with punch, bark and meanness, a moody instrument that likes to fight back but that also has a willingness to purr sweetly when coaxed......no feather finger players here. For us, the Collings 290 DC S is about as good as it gets. Adding the Bigsby only makes it that much better as we now have the ability to add shimmer to chords, increase the sustaining properties of rhythm passages and add ambiany, incidental styles to this models bag of tricks.

This I-35 LC  is a very special piece that, even among Collings' consistently fantastic LC's, is a true standout both in terms of tone and beauty. The optional double sunburst is a pricey upgrade at $600.00msrp, but now that we've seen this upgrade in person we feel it's almost essential. Obviously the guitar's back having a sunburst finish versus the standard, solid medium brown stain has no effect on tone or playability, but the visual impact will most likely increae the joy-of-ownership quotient considerably for most of our customers. Let's face it, in this price range an instrument's tone and build quality are expected to be top notch, but when simply admiring our guitars, we also want the best possible visual experience!

Excerpts from TQR's I-35 LC Review

The notes spill out of it with a brilliant harmonic transparency that seems quite unique. Response to pick attack is very fast with an immediate percussive character followed by sustain- ing qualities and rich harmonics that linger far longer than
a solidbody guitar that is soaking up string vibration. Hit a big E chord on the I35 with a great amp like our ‘66 Deluxe Reverb on ‘4’ and you can waggle the sustaining harmonic overtones or even coax harmonic feedback out of the A, D and G strings if you wish. And if you think about it, the con- cept of a guitar with such a fast, percussive attack that also possesses the sustaining qualities of a semi-hollowbody is uncommon, to say the least. By comparison, many semi-hol- lowbodies respond with a softer attack and sag in the notes, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all – but the Collings is different in the way that you can sense the combined effect of the rosewood fingerboard, mahogany neck, maple center block and the maple ply body all actively influencing the dynamic response and tone of the guitar. You can really hear the influence of the wood.....

....The tones available from the Lollars mounted in the I35 LC will please just about any fan of humbucking pick- ups, and their overall clarity is outstanding, which makes them all the more versatile with a wide range of amplifiers and effects.

......As we emphasized with Bill Collings, the neck, fingerboard and frets on guitars are the business end where music is made, and the first to get our critical attention. This isn’t lost on Collings, and the appearance, feel and playability of the I35 is faultless, further enhanced by the 24 7/8” scale.

This is one of our favorite ways to spec' a City Limits Deluxe. Not only do we love the way the 'dog hair' finish looks, but the slightly thicker and warmer tone achieved by using mahogany throughout rather than a mahogany body capped by curly maple also makes for a fantastic sonic variation on this model. The Lollar Imperial Overwound in the bridge position continues this theme by adding just a touch more thickness and drive to the City Limits tone for a slightly less 'polite and airy' tone.

Bill Collings has designed his electric line of guitars, just as he has his acoustics, to be strongly reminiscent of the classic instruments he admires while adding enough of his own design genious to avoid direct comparisons between his instruments and the classic, iconic guitars from which he draws inspiration.

Every year we spec' several City Limits models with solid mahogany bodies. These are intended to meet the wants and needs of our customers whose ideal, dual humbucker guitar posseses Collings' beautiful build quality, sexy visual appeal and impeccable playability, but can also be more directly compared, tonally, to the late 50's guitars that inspired Bill to design and build this model.

While the usual City Limits' mahogany/maple cap body is part of an overall design that's well-known to have a beautiful voice and to have been embraced by hundreds of guitarists, this model's slightly longer scale length and weight relieved, or as Collings' is quick to correct, 'tone enhanced', bodies as well as the use of Lollars' excellent, low output Imperial pickups lends a crisper, somewhat more open, brighter characteristic to this model versus what many consider The Classic, Late 50's Michigan tone. Fat Sound's Take

We sold this guitar when it was new in 2007. It's the 181st I-35 Deluxe that Collings built. We feel it is one of the finest examples of Collings' I-35 that's ever come through our shop. We've sold a ridiculous number of Collings Electrics between their initial release in 2006 and today and yet we clearly remember this particular guitar....such was its impact on us as very picky guitarists and somewhat jaded purveyors of high-end instruments. Not only does this piece exemplify the goal that Collings strives for with each I-35 they build, but the vintage-style nature of the top on this piece makes it a true stunner from a visual standpoint.

The maple top has that eastern maple style figuring found on the more highly figured Gibsons from the 50's. Surf over to Collings' website and navigate to their I-35 Deluxe page. Notice they chose to showcase an I-35 with a very similar style of maple.

Both the fingerboard and headstock are modestly figured Brazilian Rosewood, of which Collings' supply has since gotten so sparse that they no longe include it on current guitars. Brazilian as standard was nice while it lasted, but those days are long gone. The back and side, which are milled from a solid piece of Mahogany are nicely striped lending a subtle, but meaningful amount of character to the backside of the guitar which provides and ideal complement to the figuring of the guitar's solid maple top.

Our "take" on this guitar is simple: if you've been looking for a used Collings I-35, prefer a vintage look to a more modern aesthetic and are willing to pay a premium, though still a nice savings over the same model purchased new; if you insist on having an I-35 that ranks as top-shelf both sonically and visually, then this is your new guitar.

And, as always, we back our assessment, while taking into account the subjectivity of tone, with our 72 hour approval period.

I-35 Deluxe #46 shows absolutely no wear on its finish or frets. It just barely misses the 'Mint' rating due to some mild patina on the nickel tuners which we actually find attractive. If desired, this patina could easily be removed with a mild metal polish. We like the way it looks so we'll leave this adhesion up to the guitar's next owner.

An exceptional example of a first year, I-35 Deluxe. Only a mild patina on the tuners prevents this guitar from receiving a 'Mint' condition rating. As with all early Collings Electrics, I-35 Deluxe #46 (yep, that's the 46th I-35 built) has a Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and headstock overlay. The increasing scarcity of Brazilian led Collings to switch to Madagascar a couple of years ago and while Madagascar is an excellent wood with very similar tonal properties to Brazilian, the Brazilian board combined with the first year production and low serial number makes this an exceptionally desirable piece. Adding to this guitar's appeal is a fantastic curly maple top and the preferred Dot Inlay, Double Bound body and neck spec's.
