Wren and Cuff

Fat Sound Welcomes the Sweet Sonic Mayhem that is Wren and Cuff!

Wren and Cuff is a small effects company based in Westlake Village, CA.

In business since 2006, building handmade guitar and bass effects, musician, electronic freak and major gear head, Matthew Holl started his business as a part time hobby. As word spread, his business grew. A one man obsession evolved into a full time job.

Wren and Cuff’s reputation for high quality effects with pristine sound that could also take the beatings of weekend musicians and touring acts alike, further solidified the small company as stand outs in a sea of DIY competitors. It didn’t hurt that the pedals were great looking, free of redundant bells and whistles and that Wren and Cuff’s reputation for exceptional service with focused attention to customer inquiries, questions and feedback, was unsurpassed.

In 2007, Matthew made Wren and Cuff his full time job, moved operations and hired three employees to keep up with the growing demand. It wasn’t long until professionals from multiple genres welcomed Wren and Cuff pedals as part of their live and studio arsenals. Some of these notables Wren and Cuff users include:

Brian Ray - Paul McCartney Band
Troy Sanders - Mastodon
Sean Hurley - John Mayer Band, will.i.am
Scott Shriner - Weezer
Juan Alderete - The Mars Volta

Wren and Cuff continues to grow. Proud to create new, exciting, quality effects that keep pedal junkies mouth’s watering and those in need of straight forward, versatile effects, extremely satisfied.

Gorgeous housings, beautiful innards and even my favorite NOS knobs courtesy of Daka-Ware! I currently am running five of Matt's pedals on my personal pedal board. Wren and Cuff's Your Face, Box of War, Tri-Pie 70 and Tall Font Russian take up nearly the entire bottom row of my custom Helweg board and Matt's Phat Phuk B occupies the last spot on the top row before my signal path hits a few time domain effects. WIth all three of Matt's Muff pedals in a row one could easily say I've got Muff overkill. My original plan was to run all three uust long enough to figure out which was getting the most use, but after a few months I realized I wasn't willing to give up any of them. Each offer fantastic fuzz tones that are unique enough from one another to justify making room for all of them.

Many guitarists have never actually experienced a great fuzz pedal. You can't base your opinion of red wine after drinking a glass or two of Rex Goliath Merlot from your local grocery store. Until you sample a great Brunello di Montalcino, for example, you'll never know what's possible when some of the world's best grapes have been lovingly massaged into a masterpiece by a gifted vintner. The various parts fermented into fuzz pedals by Matt Holl are the Brunellos of the fuzz pedal world; perfectly balanced, full-bodied, chewy, yet smooth.....an absolute treat for the senses!. Find out what you've been missing!

Fat Sound's Take

Fuzz Aficionados agree that the Muff fuzzes are among the best vintage fuzz pedals ever created, but put any 10 of these Muff fans into a room together and within minutes an argument will break out as to which era is The Best era. Of the 90's, made-in-Russia units it's common to find proponents of the "Civil War" era pedals, but the "Tall Font Russian" units with their signature clear, present and more aggressive top-end, mean low-end growl and hollow mids also have their own support group. The Tall Font version is capable of very useable, slightly sizzling distortion tones as well as very thick, smooth lead tones. And a cool factoid is that you can run a moderate gain boost or overdrive pedal before the TFR and dial up its gain just to the point where it smooths out and further refines the TFR's already very useable fuzz. Where some fuzz units are radical, raunchy, special effects devices, like all of the best Muff's, Wren and Cuff's impeccable version of the mid-90's Russian Muff is a very useable pedal that you just might find yourself using as a primary distortion generator!

We clearly remember the release of the Tall Font, Russian units in the mid-90's and our amazement at how pedals with such......erm......funky.... build quality could actually sound so fantastic. Of course, like every generation of Muffs, these Tall Font pedals varied greatly from batch to batch and even from pedal to pedal (in '94 or '95 Fat Sound's owner literally lined up about 20 of these units in an attempt at finding just the right one).

With the Tall Font Russian, Wren and Cuff has once again shown their devotion to building a meticulously accurate and consistent recreation of an exceptional sounding version of the Tall Font and they've done so with a more pedal-board-friendly footprint, without housings you can see light through, flaking paint, loose battery doors or the risk of cracked circuit boards due to low-quality, board mounted plastic jacks.

Another Winner from Wren and Cuff!

From Wren and Cuff

I have literally hand-wired (meaning point-to-point, no proper circuit board, on perf-board) over 150 muff and muff-related pedals in the early days of Wren and Cuff, then many many more after getting proper PCB boards. Why I mention this is because as you might imagine, my ears have become very accustomed to the nuances and intricacies of these pedals.

I’ve spent many hours digging for some slight difference between a vintage pedal I love and one I’m building for one reason or another to be sure I could truly nail the sound. I’ve had my employees flat out saying, “Sorry man, I just can’t hear a difference”, then giving me the, man, this guy is crazy look. Why I mention this is to say that after all the muff type pedal builds under my belt, The Tall Font Russian was the toughest pedal to nail. Why did I choose the Tall Font S****K version to recreate? After a conversation via email with an acquaintance who plays in a very successful band this quest began. In his words, after being asked about his affection for these pedals he said: “Yet to find anything close. And (after) hearing a lot of players, rarely do I like their distorted/fuzz sounds. I really think there is a reason the s****ks are so collectable. I prefer the first series green ones with the screws on the side. The series after this had them on the top. I don’t like the civil wars or any others besides the green ones. In a pinch, I’ll use a screws on the top one, but it has to be green.”

I was curious why he didn’t follow the standard, civil war muffs are the best Russian muffs belief. After some investigation I found that they’re very, very, similar in tone, parts, and values. Very close. But to me, the highs are more present and clear in the Tall Fonts resulting in an openness in the highs unique to this pedal. They’re generally not as dark sounding, which gives them a slight gritty edge not found in the war muffs. Some dislike this trait but to me there is a rudeness to them that sets the TF’s apart from the C-War.

As usual with our muff-type pedals, I found that transistor selection was very important. After removing the transistors from vintage units then testing the gains I found some inconsistencies between vintage units. After some obsessive listening tests I went with one particularly sweet sounding pedal and matched the gains as closely as possible using a mix of trannies. I also was surprised to find an important biasing resistor and a capacitor that were a much different value than stated on the components and schematic. Discovering this helped to find that sound I was looking for!

One of my favorite traits is a “boxy” quality to the sound that was the toughest thing to reproduce. Wish I had a better way to describe it, but “boxy” is what it is to my ears.

It almost sounded right, but I couldn’t get a certain growl I heard on the vintage pedal and the boxy thing still wasn’t quite right..Finally, I tested the pots and found the actual vs. stated pot values were over 30% “off” in some cases. IMO this inconsistancy is partly responsible for one unit sounding particularly sweet and another sounding so, so. In other words, those absolutely crappy pots created a happy accident. After custom tweaking those pots, I realized that this was one of the things responsible for keeping the low-mid range from getting to mucky and is also a factor in the more over-drive type quality these Russians can produce. I found the growl! The kooky values found can’t be purchased as such so we have to mod each pedal’s pots ourselves to get the desired values.

As far as I know, we’re the only company that goes as far as to modify the pots for a S****k clone.

This boxy-growl also helps make them particularly great on bass, and fantastic for raunchy, less friendly guitar tones ala The Black Keys, White Stripes, Mars Volta, and many others seeking a nasty F-You snarl (not saying the afore mentioned bands use these exact pedals, just using their tones as a reference). With many other desirable muffers (and our Tri Pie 70’) the goal is warm, smooth and buttery, but the TFR has a different goal in mind. There is a growl and raunchy yet truly musical sound produced by these ugly green beasts. The lows have an overdrivey compression that keeps things tight, and the highs have a rich upper-harmonic thing going on that’ll make one understand the affection some have for this pedal. The mids have the standard muff-scoop but it is not as pronounced as some of the other generations. Add to that a less gainy/fuzzy tone overall and you end up with a unique muff with a character all its own. Good stuff.

Sadly, my quest for this tone resulted in a couple of butchered vintage pedals, but the end result was worth it.

The bummer about the vintage Tall Fonts? Cheap, cheap, cheap plastic jacks mounted to the circuit-board that beg to be given a hard knock resulting in a cracked circuit board. Equally cheap pots (knobs you turn) that feel flimsy, break easily, and barely hold the knobs in place making it rare to find one with all three original knobs. Non-true bypass tone-suck, no power supply jack, huge footprint, and heavy as hell round off the list of negatives the originals carried.

In short, they could be a big pain in the ass.

  • True hard-wire mechanical bypass
  • Standard “Boss-style” 9VDC (-) tip power supply jack or 9V batt operated
  • Small foot-print
  • The best jacks available mounted off the circuit board

Hey Stu,

Got to try out the pedal tonight and I love it!

Took me about 2 minutes to dial in the same sweet spot that I use on the vintage Muff (Mid-90's Tall Font).

It's obvious that the Wren and Cuff guys went the extra mile to capture the vibe of the original pedal.

As usual, thanks for the guidance and great service.

Fat Sound's Take

A fantastic version of a truly iconic fuzz. 1970 is a favorite year for the infamous Big Muff, but all fuzz fans know how inconsistent these original pedals were and how nearly impossible it can be to find The Right one. Fuzz fans rejoice! You no longer have to scour the web looking for 35 year old triangle knob fuzz pedals just so you can try 'em only to discover you've just purchased yet another vintage fuzz that lacks The Magic or that has been heavily modified.

The current E-H Big Muff, which we also carry, is actually a pretty excellent approximation of the better Big Muffs from this era and for about $70.00 they'll get the job done for those who are on a limited budget or for players who just don't have a highly-tuned ear for fuzz tones. For the fuzz cognoscenti, however, or those who simply want to know they own The Best, the Tri-Pie 70' has that 5% edge that makes all the difference to the truly tone/fuzz obsessed. Comparing the Wren and Cuff to the E-H is akin to comparing two vintage 70's Muffs where one (Wren and Cuff) has every possible ounce of the full-on magic, is slightly smoother with more musical gain and the other (E-H) has almost got it. Buying the Tri-Pie 70' ensures you get The One every time! And Matt's rock solid housing, beautiful silk screening and use of NOS Daka-Ware knobs simply makes them a pleasure to own.....if, like us, you appreciate these kinds of things.

Why 70' ? - We have no idea why Matt decided to place the apostrophe after the 0 rather than before the 7, but we figure it was a conscious decision based on creating one of those classic Big Muff-like design anomalies that will allow future collectors to easily differentiate between eras........or........his genius doesn't extend to grammatical nuances! ;-) (sorry Matt.....I couldn't help myself!)

Matt's Tri-Pie 70' is perfect and perfectly consistent:

Offering a medium degree of warm, buttery aggression (by fuzz pedal standards) with no harsh buzz, spit, splat or abruptly decaying notes that just go....ppffztttt, the Tri-Pie 70' is extremely simple to dial-in, sounds great with almost every guitar/amp combination and can nicely cover sonic ground ranging from Hendrix to the opening phrases of 'Cliffs of Dover' to the more modern styles of guitarists like Billy Corgan. The Tri-Pie 70' is the classic Muff fuzz made perfect......and consistent! Run a Tri-Pie 70' after a Teese RMC8 Eqwahlyzer Wah pedal and be prepared to lose 3 or 4 hours!

From Wren and Cuff

The Wren and Cuff Tri Pie '70 is our version of the famous ***-Muff “triangle knob” fuzz from around 1970. What we’ve done is made what we consider the best sounding tri-knob replication you can find.

Compared to the modern-day BM, the Tri Pie 70′ has less saturation, a bit less mid-scoop, and more snarl, while at the same time possessing a smoothness that sweetens things in a very musical way. Its range is more useful, responds well to your guitar’s volume knob, and even gets into the overdrive zone at lower settings.

Here is one thing that sets the Wren and Cuff Tri-Pie 70’ apart from many of the other B-Muff recreations:

Rather than chasing down magical part #’s and sexy looking transistors, we’ve blind-tested a plethora of different types and transistor combos to come up with what we believe to be the sweetest mix of high and lower gain transistors that will yield beautifully rich and complex saturation full of color, bloom and sustain. Contrary to popular belief, vintage “NOS” transistors aren’t that hard to find. Anyone that has a few good suppliers and is willing buy in bulk can get most silicon NOS transistors with a little homework. Problem is, the inconsistencies from muff to muff and gain variances between transistors with the same part numbers makes the search for the “right” transistors a bit pointless.

When someone is chasing after a sweet-sounding year/version of a muff they’ve heard or heard-of, they may not know it, but what they’re really chasing after is one of the really good ones within that version. The ones that randomly got the transistors that had the characteristics needed to produce a pedal that had “that sound”. I don’t (excuse my change from “we” to “I”) want to paint an over-exaggerated picture of the inconsistencies inherent to these pedals. Truth is, there was a much greater amount of consistency from pedal to pedal than germanium transistor based Fuzz Faces for example. But silicon transistors (which all the muffs had) were still “new” at the time and not nearly as consistent as they are now. So the inconsistency factor is definitely a valid point. And I’d bet my booty that most of the big names in music at that time sorted through more than a few pedals before finding the one that they liked.

So here’s what we’ve focused on:

Finding a great combo of trannies and guaranteeing that each Tri Pie 70' will be totally consistent and sound the way it should. So what transistors do we use?
We prefer to keep that to ourselves, but we will say that it is a combo of common and slightly uncommon transistors with the characteristics that we feel produce a glorious sounding muffer. We hope you’ll agree!

If you like the current EH muffs, but have found them to be harsh and brittle at times, or much more “buzzy” than you expected, then the Tri-Pie 70' may be for you.

Fat Sound's Take

The Wren and Cuff Box of War is Matt Holl's exceptionally accurate sonic recreation of the EH "Civil War" muff. Matt is one of the world's foremost authorities on the various classic Big Muff eras. After creating the fantastic Tri-Pie 70' for those seeking the warmer, Germanium based 1970 Muff tones and then the equally amazing Tall Font Russian to satisfy the needs of the avid fans of the mid-90's, Russian-built Muffs, Matt decided to not only dig into the earlier 90's Russian Muff circuits and tones, but to have a simply gorgeous, custom housing built to truly showcase the amount of time and effort he had put into getting his last Big Muff offering just right.

Similar in tone to the Tall Font BM's, the Wren and Cuff Box of War has a slightly darker tone overall with a bit more of a fuzzy feel versus the Tall Font's more distortion meets fuzz tone. The response to the guitar volume knob is unparalleled in a muff style fuzz.ᅠ While the Box of War can get an overdrive feel on the bridge pickup, the tone is pure vintage fuzz with singing sustain and tons of harmonic content.ᅠEven at bedroom levels the Wren and Cuff Box of War provides that liquid lead tone making it ideal for around-the-house players who need fantastic tones at ultra low volumes. Just dial your amp to its sweet spot, crank the BOW's Fuzz, dial in your preferred level of bass to bright balance and the roll the BOW's Volume control all the way down to zero......gradually bring it up to the perfect volume for late night sessions of recording. It's absolutely brilliant! Gilmour and Thurston Moore fans will be amazed at the variety of those ultra-desirable tones available via the Box of War!

From Wren and Cuff

O.K. I lied….

If you follow the forums etc. you may know that I had said the Tall Font Russian would be the last Wren and Cuff Big Muff vintage recreation.
Well after a long time spent trying to make it happen, I was finally able to get a custom box (enclosure) made that I’d been trying to make happen for a long time…
Believe it or not, it’s very difficult to get a custom metal box made!

What is it?

Well many of my fellow Big Muff geeks have already figured it out. The “Box of War” is a true recreation of the EH “Civil War” Sov***’s. I say “true recreation” because we pride ourselves on truly digging into the vintage units we recreate and go to great lengths to duplicate all aspects of the original circuits to the best of our ability.
The tone is in the details I like to say…Rest assured we have spared nothing in researching this rare, much-loved, but cheaply made BM pi.

This box is HEAVY DUTY! Not at all one of the thin aluminum type enclosures you see on many cheap pedals. When you hold this pedal, it is heavy. The idea behind this was to make an enclosure as heavy duty as the old Russians but with a smaller footprint and of course super high quality everything.

It can also double as a weapon if you get in a scrape after a show. A nice thump on the head with your BOW should fend off any potential threats.

Reportedly favored by David Gilmour, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and many others this is your chance to own a vintage recreation that is made to be beat-up.
Very closely related to the Tall Font BM’s, the Civil War’s have a bit darker and a bit fuzzier tone. Like the Tall Fonts, they’ve got less output and are less fuzzy than most other muffs but are cherished for their woody sustain and presence. These beasts became a secret weapon for many but usually required two or three back-up pedals due to the poor quality components to be sure a pro-level player could make it through a tour using one on their board.

Fat Sound's Take

The PPie-B is another pedal that Wren and Cuff markets as being designed for bass players. I'm not the guy to talk to about the subtleties of bass guitar tone since the only bass rig I care about is going to either be a Fender or Rick 4-String plugged straight into a vintage, all-tube Ampeg SVT head and an 8x10 cabinet.

Matt told me that he really had a solid following among bass players and that I really needed to try the PPie-B out along with the rest of his pedals. Well, it's no secret that I'm a huge Wren and Cuff fan and lean on Matt's pedals heavily for my own tone so I decided I'd give the PPie-B a shot.

Man.....I was seriously impressed by how fantastic this pedal works with both my high volume rig du jour and my current around-the-house rig! Yes, with my Strat, the PPie-B will create a very useable fuzz that falls more into the mildly aggressive, slightly sawtooth capable category.....which is very cool and very useable, but where the PPie-B is working for me in my already fuzz heavy pedal lineup is as more of an overdrive-meets-distortion-meets-fuzz pedal. Using my Strat's neck pickup and playing higher register leads, with the PPie-B Shape, Volume and Saturation all set in the reasonable 11:00 range I'm able to get exceptionally fat, singing tones that are decidedly tube-amp-like, have infinite sustain and that, frankly, sound better to my ear than the lead channels on a lot of the boutique amps I try.....especially those relying on a cascading preamp type of circuit to create their higher gain tones.

Keeping these settings on the PPie-B and switching to the Strat's bridge pickup while playing rhythm, a bit of fuzz-tone reveals itself on top of the distortion which is very cool for achieving tones that amplifiers just aren't generally meant to create on their own while making sure my tone has some cutting power.

I recently adopted Steve Carr's new Sportsman 112 amp for home use. It has a fantastic, '65 Princeton Reverb clean/reverb vibe and via its "Headroom" control I can lower the wattage to get the sweet spot down to a more reasonable home level. This, American style, dual 6V6 amp gives me the clean tone I want and also serves as a fantastic platform for pedals. My current signal chain is: Thorn R/S Strat > Teese RMC8 > Spaceman Mercury III Boost (which I can either use as my primary/moderate overdrive generator or as an excellent line buffer by setting its Boost control to zero) > Pickle Pie-B for my more agro rhythm tones and my lead tones > Wren and Cuff Tri-Pie 70' fuzz (for my Hendrixian distortion tones) > Fulltone TTE for perfect, tube/tape delay sweetness and then finally the Carr Sportsman.

I bet 70% of my customers could buy this exact rig and instantly have the vast majority of tones they've been looking for.

Don't pass this pedal by simply because you don't play bass. It's an absolute favorite guitar effect pedal of mine.......I rate this one a Must Have.

Stu Carter, owner Fat Sound Guitars

From Wren and Cuff

For a long time now I’d been planning on making a fuzz pedal designed for the many distortion loving bass players out there. It all started when I began getting a large percentage of my Pickle Pie sales from bass players who knew The Pickle’s reputation as a “guitar” pedal that could handle the low frequencies of the bass, and give a nice spongy fuzz much better than most of the Muff family.

Even though most were happy with this pedal, I had always wanted to take a stab at doing some tweaks to The Pickle to create a pedal with a much different voice, but one that still uses the same basic skeleton as the PP, and strives to resolve many of the common quandaries bassists come across in their search for a fuzz that really works for their instrument and their playing situation. Long story short, I spent much of my spare time for a few months trying many, many different ideas and experiments till I came up with something I was really happy with.

This effect pedal has been tested under the extreme conditions of Stu's bedroom and has been found to meet the stringent requirements necessary to receive Fat Sound Guitar's seal of assurance.

You may be thinking “Oh no, not another clean booster…”.

If that is your thought right now, I don’t blame you. If you’re a stompbox junkie you probably know that there is no shortage of signal boosters out there.

So what makes the Phat Phuk Hybrid Booster different?

Well, a few things:

  • This booster was not made to be “transparent”. It’s not a JFET or MOSFET based booster. There are many fine boosters out there that are designed to be “transparent.” If that’s what you’re after, the Phat Phuk may not be for you. A JFET is used in the Phat Phuk however, more on that below.
  • The Phat Phuk is not a clone of any other pedal.
  • The Phat Phuk is a JFET/germanium single circuit hybrid booster. There is a double booster I know of with two independent boosts, one being a germanium, one JFET based. It’s actually a very fine pedal. Perhaps there is another single circuit JFET-germ booster out there, but I’m not aware of it.

Here’s what the Phat Phuk Hybrid is:

A germanium/JFET booster. A unique sounding pedal which adds a beautiful sheen to your guitar’s top end and a bit of grit to the overall tone. You’ll hear a light to medium emphasis on the hi-mids and a nice round boost to the lows. It’s a fantastic pedal for situations where you want a lift in your overall level, during a chorus or bridge for example, with a bit of bawdy bump via the germanium transistor.

One nice feature is also the more modern JFET transistor at the input which keeps the pedal impedance-friendly when it comes to other pedals and/or active pickups. This helps the Phat Phuk to remain consistent whether you put a Strat in front of it, or an ESP.

Another recommended use:

As a simple preamp when going direct into your DAW. Helps to de-sterilize your direct tone and add a little life before hitting your favorite amp sim.

Something else that was considered when creating the Phat Phuk Hybrid. Many clean-boosts offer way too much boost in my opinion. In any normal playing situation, including intentionally slamming the front end of a tube amp to induce the amp’s natural overdrive, one really only needs a hefty thump to get the job done. There’s nothing wrong with having a large amount of volume on tap, but a problem that can sometimes occur is a lack of ability to fine tune the amount of boost you want. When the sweep of the knob goes from zero to melt-down with one turn of the knob, it gets tough to really dial in a precise amount of boost. Also a slight bump of the boost knob (with a foot or nervous “live show” jitters) can send things out of control.

I know because its happened to me. Went for the big chorus during a song, hit the clean boost (not mine, this was long before Wren and Cuff existed) and tore the heads off the people in the front, pissed off the sound man, and pretty much ruined that song. Therefore, the volume sweep was reduced with the Phatty. You still get a big gob of gain, and probably won’t ever need to run the pedal “at 11″, but the trade -off is worth the extra control. Just an example of what Wren and Cuff prides itself on: pedals that sound great, attention to detail, look beautiful, are tough, and are made with the “real world” player in mind.

Give the Phat Phuk a try! It’s beauty is in it’s simplicity, but you’ll be surprised how often it’s on!

Fat Sound's Take

Don't miss this pedal simply because Matt chooses to market it primarily to bassists! This is the clean boost, out of the dozen or more that we carry, that Fat Sound's owner uses with his own rigs. Primarily transparent, but with a nice addition of fullness and bloom to your low end, the PP-B is excellent when used at any volume, but really stands out from the others when you want to regain some of the fullness that can be lost when attenuating an amp by either an on-board master volume, power scaling style circuit, voltage control, external attenuator, etc...

Run at 1:00 and lower, the PP-B simply adds thickness, bloom and a touch of sustain to an already clean running amplifier. At setting above 1:00 the PP-B will gradually push your amp's power tubes a bit harder and create more speaker interaction until you have just the right amount of wonderfully dynamic, smooth overdrive that can be easily cleaned up with a lighter pick attack or a slight reduction in your guitar's volume control.

The Phat Phuk - B has a tremendous range of uses. Whether you want to thicken a purely clean tone, bring fullness and bloom back to a signal degraded by attenuation, increase your level of gain in a nicely transparent manner or increase the dynamics of your signal you'll find this little gem to be your best friend. A varitable Swiss Army knife.

From Wren and Cuff

You may be thinking, “Oh no, not another clean booster…”.
If that is your thought right now, I don’t blame you. If you’re a stompbox junkie you probably know that there is no shortage of signal boosters out there.
So what makes the Phat Phuk Bass Booster different?

Well, a few things

  • This booster is made specifically for the bass guitar. It was designed to accommodate tunings down to a five string’s typical low B and can be used for even lower tunings.
  • Pink Sparkle Paint with a solid pink base coat. Then a durable clear-pink sparkle top-coat. The base coat and top-coat give a deep gorgeous finish. You gotta be a confident man to have a pink pedal, or a girl who happens to like the color pink.

Here’s what the Phat Phuk is

A germanium/JFET booster. A unique sounding pedal which adds a beautiful sheen to your bass’ top end and a bit of grit to the overall tone. It’s a fantastic pedal for situations where you want a lift in your overall level, during a chorus or bridge for example, with a bit of bawdy bump via the germanium transistor.

One nice feature is also the more modern JFET transistor at the input which keeps the pedal impedance-friendly when it comes to active bass pickups. This helps the Phat Phuk to remain consistent whether you put a P-Bass in front of it, or a Warwick Thumb.

Another recommended use: As a simple preamp when going direct into your DAW. Helps to de-sterilize your bass’s direct tone and add a little life before the signal is converted to ones and zeros.

Something else that was considered when creating the Phat Phuk B. Many clean-boosts offer way too much boost in my opinion. In other words: A meticulous attention to detail.

Give the Phat Phuk a try! Its beauty is in its simplicity, but you’ll be surprised how often it’s on!

This effect pedal has been tested under the extreme conditions of Stu's bedroom and has been found to meet the stringent requirements necessary to receive Fat Sound Guitar's seal of assurance.

[Review Note] Not every amplifier responds the same way with a given pedal. This review is based on running this particular pedal into two demo rigs. The first is a higher volume, 30+ watt, quad EL84, cathode biased Dr Z. Z- Wreck head with open-back 212 Cab (one Celestion Blue and one Celestion Gold). The second is the more around-the-house-friendly 19 watt, partial fixed bias, dual 6V6 Carr Sportsman 112 combo with adjustable 'headroom' features. Every amp differs in how it takes certain pedals, but these two amps are nearly polar opposites. If you are interested in how this pedal will work with your specific amp please call or email and we'll put it through its paces with your exact rig or as close to it as possible.

Fat Sound's Take

As much fun as it is to be able to design your own Fuzz Face exactly the way you want it and have it show up on your doostep quickly and with Wren and Cuff's beautiful quality, I've added the Matt's Choice to my own board simply because, where I use 3 different era Big Muffs, I really only want one great Fuzz Face. My tremendous amount of repsect for Matt's ear when it comes to fuzz pedals made my choice simply; I just bough the one he designed for himself! I love it!!!

Stu Carter, tone consultant, owner Fat Sound Guitars

Matt's Choice Features and Specifications

  • Transistors - NOS Germanium
  • Resistors - Carbon Comp
  • Capacitors - Electrolytic Mullard Tropical Fish - I like these caps because they give things a more refined sound, while still keeping things warm and smooth. The values used are still big “entrance”, little “exit”, but not as big and not as small as the original FF. The Fish Face has a more even sound that tightens things up nicely but still retains the squish, I love it. - Wren and Cuff's Matt Holl, owner, designer
  • You Knob - Low Cut
  • NOS Daka-Ware Pointer Knobs
  • Power - Zinc Carbon 9v Battery or Positive Tip Adapter

Base Price - $179.99

Component Choices

#1 - Choose YOUR preferred engine a.k.a. transistor:

  • 60's style Germanium (+ $20.00)
  • 70's style BC108 Silicone (no additional charge!)
  • The 60/70 (+ $11.00)

#2 - Choose YOUR preferred resistor

  • Old-school Carbon Composition (+ $6.00)
  • Metal-Film  (no additional charge!)

#3 - Choose YOUR preferred capacitor

  • The OG Caps (no additional charge!)
  • The Mullard Fish Face (+ $9.00)

#4 - Choose YOUR options

  • Side bias adjustment knob. (+ $15.00)
  • De-bufferizer to the front end of your pedal. (+ $15.00)
  • Add smoothing caps to the silicon version.
  • Keep it vintage!
There is a 470! resistor that regulates the volume output on a FF. When built stock, the unity gain (same volume as bypassed) is around max volume. Our standard- default version is modded with a higher value resistor which increases output to a more modern level without affecting tone. If you're a true vintage freak, choose this option and we’ll use the lower output original resistor. Just to clarify: This option will give you the lower vintage output. NOT choosing this option will keep our preferred higher output! If you want the increased output, DO NOT DO ANYTHING.
  • Keep it vintage! (part two)
As previously mentioned, each pedal comes with a slightly larger value Mullard “tropical fish” (. 047μF) cap. This simply lets a bit more of the girth come out of the pedal and gives a bit more even, fuller sound, but still retains the FF squish. It’s a subtle change, but one I’ve found very useful. If you're staying true to vintage specs, then choose this option and we'll keep the original .01μF cap.

#5 Tailor the You Knob

  • Make it a pre-gain knob (no additional charge!)
  • Make it a low-cut knob  (no additional charge!)

Email Us to request a Your Face .pdf form for much more detailed info and to start building a custom Your Face pedal that's exclusively yours!

The Original 60's Your Face

This is Wren and Cuff's Hendrix-era Fuzz Face version and if that's the Fuzz Face tone you're going for then this is a very safe bet!

While Wren and Cuff's innovative "Your Face"  custom pedal program is all about giving fuzz lovers the ability to design their own Fuzz Face based pedal, there are a few 'stock" Your Face pedals available for those who want a Wren and Cuff quality Fuzz Face style pedal without actually designing their own custom version.

This "Original 60's" Your Face fuzz pedal listing is where you can simply purchase a classic, traditional, 60's style Germanium Transistor based Fuzz Face built with the exceptional quality and beauty that Matt Holl of Wren and Cuff is known for as well as a few very subtle, but extremely useful, modifications.

The customizable "You" control is spec'd as a low-cut for the stock Original 60's which essentially allows user control over how fat and vintage the pedal sounds while offering the ability to modernize the sound to taste by gradually reducing the explosive low-end that the 60's Fuzz Face pedals are known for.

Original 60's "Your Face" Specifications

  • Transistors - Dual Vintage Germanium (slightly higher gains than vintage spec' for a useful increase in the amount of gain available)
(Matt is secretive about the actual parts numbers for his preferred transistors. The specific, NOS vintage units he prefers are becoming increasingly difficult to locate)
  • Resistors - Period Correct Carbon Comp
  • Output Capacitors - Mullard "Tropical Fish" with increased values over vintage spec' to allow more lows to come through
  • Knobs - NOS Daka-Ware Pointer
  • Power - Zinc Carbon 9v Battery or Positive Tip Barrel adapter

Custom Features / Modifications

  • Custom "You" Knob - functions as a low-cut to allow for fine tuning of the lows. The highest setting results in a very large low end that will be familiar to 60's Fuzz Face fans and is very period correct. By dialing this control back you can tighten and focus the fuzz to your preference. Basically, the lower the "You" control is set, the more modern the gain becomes which has the added benefit of allowing players with less fuzz control technique to gradually increase the pedal's full-on explosiveness as their technique improves.
  • Modified for higher output volume
  • Reverse-log fuzz potentiometer that allows for finer tuning of the amount of fuzz applied

Whenever we happen to have the "Original 60's" Your Face pedals in stock you can simply click the 'Add To Cart' button and we'll get one of the coolest Fuzz face style pedal currently available out to you right away.

Fat Sound's Take

This is Wren and Cuff's early-70's Fuzz Face. Very similar to the original, red, Silicon transistor based pedal used by Eric Johnson for his memorbale tone on the intro to Cliffs of Dover. If that's the Fuzz Face tone you're going for then this is a very safe bet!

An ultra-smooth high-gain silicon 70's style fuzzer. May be the smoothest most useful silicon fuzz you've ever heard!

Specifications

  • Transistors - Two BC108 silicon transistors selected for specific gains.
  • Resistors - Super-Quiet Metal Film
  • Output Capacitors - Mullard "Tropical Fish" with increased values over vintage spec' to allow more lows to come through
  • Knobs - NOS Daka-Ware Pointer
  • Power - Zinc Carbon 9v Battery or Positive Tip Barrel adapter

Custom Features / Modifications

  • Added smoothing capacitors to tame spiky highs and eliminate squealing at higher volumes.
  • Custom "You" Knob - functions as a low-cut to allow for fine tuning of the lows.
