Top Tone

Fat Sound Guitars is one of only two dealers in the United States to have the honor of representing Olmar Garcia's, Brazilian-built, Top Tone pedals.

Olmar's Drive Gate DG-1 and DG-2 pedals are both heavily based on historically significant Cornish designs, but are considerably less expensive and more readily available.

The Drive Gate designs will add fantastic, unique overdrive colors to any guitarist's pedalboard, but if you're a fan of the Gilmour tone we'd consider these to be Must Have pedals.

Fat Sound's Take

The Drive Gate DG-1 is Top Tone's Take on the Pete Cornish P-2 Pedal as seen in a few of the photos above.

The DG-1 pedal, built in Brazil by Olmar Garcia, has been one of the best kept secrets (in the United States at least) in the world of high-end guitar effects pedal. Having been favorably compared to the legendary tones of Pete Cornish's pedals, Top Tone offers a smaller footprint, much faster delivery and a lower price point for pedals of very high-quality and nearly identical tones to the pedals they are typically compared to. In fact, the guitarist who turned me on to Top Tone owns Garcia's DG-1, DG-2 as well as a the Pete Cornish P-2 featured alongside the Top Tone pedal in a few of the photos above. He was even kind enough to send all three of these to me so that I could do my own comparison. As expected, based on everything we'd read or heard about Top Tone's pedals, the DG-1 was essentially a sonic twin of the Cornish P-2.

While the Cornish pedals sound fantastic, are beautifully built and look ultra-cool, they are very spendy and difficult to aquire. Of course, they also take up a lot of pedalboard real estate.....which is always at a premium.

Like the Cornish, The Drive Gate DG-1 is Big Muff based, but tuned for a less scooped midrange tone and designed with a better/borader/more linear tone control circuit.

This is an absolutely fantastic pedal!

Olmar Garcia on his Drive Gate DG-1

The Drive Gate, the first pedal in the TopTone line, is the culmination of many years of working the custom effect pedal field. The DG-1 is an exceptionally well-defined and full-bodied distortion. Based on the classic four transistor, sustaining Big Muff circuits of the 1970’s, the DG-1 is heavily refined and improved, similar to the modifications made by Pete Cornish to David Gilmour's Big Muff, overcoming the limitations of those traditional mid-scooped circuits.

The enhanced tone control covers a wide tone spectrum, with a well defined mid range, and no unusable settings in the tone control sweep. The Sustain control ranges from a light overdrive fuzz to full-on, high gain distortion. Perfect for classic drive, modern lead tones, or high powered, but very articulate power chords. The circuit is very responsive to pick attack, allowing subtle soloing or aggressive, blistering leads, with excellent harmonics. The tone and sustain controls are also very interactive. Adjusting one alters the characteristics of the other, giving a wide range of tonal possibilities.

Fat Sound's Take

Olmar Garcia's Drive Gate DG-2 is Top Tone's excellent take on the Pete Cornish G-2 Pedal and is currently being used by guitarist Dave Kilminster on Roger Water's Wall tour. One of the photos above features a beautiful Cornish P-2 which is more sonically similar to Olmar's DG-1. Unfortunately we didn't have a Cornish G-2 available on photo day! Pete Cornish's P-2 makes a pretty fantastic backdrop for effect pedal photos in general so we used a bit of creative license for the sake of a cool photo.

Like the Cornish G-2, Top Tone's DG-2 is based on the “Big Muff” circuit with some meaningful modifications in order to provide highlighted harmonics and less compression; features that make it extremely dynamic with overall characteristics that are less fuzz-based with a smoother, more natural overdrive style of gain, but with the fatness usually found in germanium transistor based pedals. Top Tone's Drive Gate DG-2 is the Gilmour sound at a more reasonable price point.

Highly Recommended!!™

Olmar Garcia on his Drive Gate DG-2

The DG-2 is based on the classic Big Muff circuit architecture like the DG-1, but the DG-2 is a whole different animal that is in a tone class all by itself, very unlike a Fuzz line. The DG-2 is a blend of overdrive and warm tube amp style distortion. It harnesses the best elements of classic British Plexi amp tones, with the tone coloring enriched by germanium components and saturation reminiscent of a Rat with a hint of Big Muff harmonics mixed in.

The DG-2 can be dialed low for warm, crunchy rhythm and lead tones, almost like an overdrive, or dial the sustain to maximum for searing, saturated, overdriven British amp-like distortion. The mid tones are very clear and articulate, allowing the DG-2 to sound just as good on the clean channel of your amp as it does on the drive channel.

Olmar Garcia on his Top Tone Light Drive

The Light Drive is designed for those seeking an overdrive with the characteristics of warm, natural sounding tube amp saturation, allowing subtle harmonics and clear pick response to shine through, yet still transparent enough to retain your guitar tone.

This is an extremely versatile pedal, whether plugged into the drive channel of your amp, or using as a booster into your clean amp channel. The natural sounding overdrive created by the Light Drive can be controlled with the volume knob on your guitar, allowing a very articulate volume response from light cleans to crunchy rhythms. It can go from subtle, lightly driven tones, to full-on blues overdrive saturation.
