Spaceman Aphelion Boost | Raw Silver Edition

FAT PRICE: $259.00 AVAILABILITY: In Stock
ADDITIONAL INFO: Ships USPS Air Priority for a typical delivery time of 2 days

The final series of Spaceman's fantastic Aphelion Boost. Available for a while longer in plaib, unfinished, silver housings. Same fantastic tone and versatility with a workingman's cosmetic! This run has been limited to 99 pieces, each one bearing Spaceman's usual number plate.

Fat Sound's Take

Our expectations for Zak's new Aphelion Boost were very high simply because we feel he is one of the most brilliant pedal designers of our time. Every pedal his has created so far has instantly been added to our must have list.

On the other hand, producing a second limited edition Boost to follow in the footsteps of Spaceman's Mercury III, a pedal we believe will achieve status along the lines of the Klon Centaur, meant that Zak really had his work cut out for him. As much faith as we have in Zak we couldn't help but be slightly concerned that the task he was undertaking might be impossible.

Fortunately any concerns we had were completed unfounded. The Aphelion is just ridiculously, insanely good! What's Zak's secret? Why can't all pedals sound like this?

The Aphelion is also different enough from the Mercury III that the Aphelion won't replace the Mercury III on the pedalboard of those fortunate enough to own both. They actually complement each other perfectly.

The range of drive starts out mild, just beyond clean boost and runs to levels beyond those of the Mercury III.  As Zak's marketing release says, the pedal is absolutely tube like in its tone and dynamics.

There will be 69 Aphelion pedals built in the silver sparkle housings and they'll go quickly. Our Polished Chrome and Blue Sparkle units sold out before arrival. As with all of Spaceman's effects once the limited run of these, in all housing finishes, is gone.......that's it. They're gone.

I sell guitar gear.......some folks understandably will think "yeah.....he's just trying to sell me a pedal!" I get it and if you read this and feel that way just move along and keep surfing. But, as someone who is obsessed with my own tone as well as the tone of each and every one of my customers I have to say this anyway..........Buy This Pedal Now.

It will blow your mind!!

From Spaceman

Aphelion - The point in the orbit of a planet or comet where it is farthest from the Sun.

Introducing the Aphelion Overdrive, the latest Spaceman tone machine, built to inspire. The Aphelion is a harmonically rich overdrive pedal, with an emphasis on even-order harmonics. It has a wide gain range from light sparkle, to overdriven tube-amp bliss. The pedal is wonderfully transparent and extremely responsive to playing dynamics. To our ears, it’s the most realistic tube-amp overdrive tone we’ve ever heard in a pedal.

In standard Spaceman fashion, we’ve come up with an exciting, truly unique design. The Aphelion is the first overdrive pedal to utilize the vintage RCA CA3080 IC, best known for it’s use in the most sought after vintage compressor pedals. What does this mean for an overdrive pedal? It helps create one of the most organic and dynamically responsive overdrive pedals on the planet.

The drive possibilities of the Aphelion go from a sparkly, shimmering boost to high-gain overdrive, with plenty of boosting power on tap. The tone control lets you balance highs and lows, with full range at 12:00. Use your neck pickup with high gain settings for singing, octave-laden lead tones.

Completely hand-soldered and handmade in Portland Oregon, the Aphelion utilizes true-bypass switching via the heaviest duty mechanical footswitch available. Open one up and you’ll see an unparalleled display of craftsmanship; Thick, high quality PCB along with detailed military-spec wiring, using vintage US made heavy-gauge stranded wire. On top of the USA-cast aluminum enclosure sits a durable, engraved vinyl faceplate and clear jewel indicator with turquoise LED. This overdrive is built to last a lifetime.

Each pedal is numbered on the nameplate, boasting it's limited availability and in addition each is signed and numbered on the inside. The Aphelion also includes a transferable three year warranty, plus a lifetime discount repair plan.

Premier Guitar's Verdict

If you’re left cold from overdrives with more knobs than usable tone, check out the Aphelion Harmonic Overdrive. The tight, responsive tone control makes it easy to tailor the tone to any amp or pickup. The Aphelion comes with a $269 price tag, which isn’t cheap—and there are even smaller-run variants that go for more. But make no mistake, the Aphelion is uncommonly well-crafted. And with total production around a few hundred, chances are you won’t see too many around either. Get one while you can!

Fat Sound's Take

It's BACK!!! Due to popular demand, as they say, Zak as released a new, limited version of his best selling Gemini III Hybrid Fuzz.

This is certainly one of the most fantastic fuzz pedals we've ever experienced. Easily adjustable from the smooth fuzz tones reminiscent of the intro to Eric Johnson's 'Cliffs Of Dover' to explosive effects such as those heard on Jimi's Woodstock rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner' as well as a near infinite number of other famous fuzz tones are readily available via the Gemini !!!. It even works well in from of cathode biased EL84 powered amplifiers. The circuit boards are a thing of beauty with an extremely clean layout, very high-quality parts and 100% hand-wired construction.

The Verdict (Premier Guitar)
You could spend a few hours with the Gemini III and just start to get into the nuances and secret back alleys of filth and fuzz that lurk within the gleaming, polished aluminum enclosure. There’s not a superfluous function on this thing—even if it looks really busy for a fuzz. The gain switches, filter function, and, most importantly, the Ge/ Si blend knob enable you to tailor a guitar-and-amp combination to any situation on the fly, at levels from subtle to extreme. This is one fearsome studio weapon.

Perhaps the biggest bummer is that, like most Spaceman pedals, there aren’t many to go around. So let this review be a plea to Spaceman Handmade Effects of Portland, Oregon, USA: Keep these units rolling off the bench. We’ll never tire of taking this trip.

The Gemini III Fuzz - Powder Coatd Black Edition - Limited to 50 Pieces

In honor of this historic space flight, we introduce the Gemini III: Dual Fuzz Generator. The word Gemini, meaning "the twins" in Latin, is a fitting name for this dual fuzz.

The Gemini III is an all-discrete (no IC's) transistor fuzz. It features two different fuzz circuits in parallel, one vintage germanium and the other, modern silicon.

The two vastly different fuzzes are blended together via the Ge/Si knob for a layered fuzz tone. Each fuzz has a choice of three gain settings via toggle switch. The Master knob controls the output of the final mix, and has enough gain on tap to cause a supernova.

The unique tone control affects each fuzz independently, yet at the same time. The remaining toggle switch controls the direction of the tone-sweep for the germanium side, allowing for opposite sweep directions. The controls allow for many tone combinations between the two fuzz circuits for some unique fuzz blends.

Completely hand-soldered and handmade in Portland Oregon, the Gemini III utilizes true-bypass switching via the heaviest-duty mechanical footswitch available.

The Gemini III covers a wide range of usable fuzz territory, including lower-gain classic tones, heavy high-gain/scooped-mid tones and so much more. There's plenty of low frequency response on hand to make for an equally awesome bass fuzz. Also great for baritone and synth.

Each pedal is numbered on the nameplate, boasting it's limited availability, and in addition each one is signed and numbered on the inside. The Gemini III also comes with a transferable three year warranty, plus a lifetime discount repair plan.

The Powder Coated Black edition has a Bright Red, Cut Glass, Jewel indicator and is limited to 50 Pieces.

This effect pedal has been tested under the extreme conditions of Stu's bedroom and has been found to meet the stringent requirements necessary to receive Fat Sound Guitar's seal of assurance.

Fat Sound's Take

As with all of Zak's pedals, Spaceman offered the Mercury III in a very limited run with 10 built in copper housings, 30 in white housings and 70 in silver housings. On offer in this listing is a very rare Mercury III Boost built in a blue housing and stamped "Japan" on its number plate. This is the only Mercury III to have been built in this color housing.

A simply phenomenal, truly organic boost that offers tons of gain without destroying your amp's natural tone. String-to-string definition is kept intact, there's none of that accentuated pick chirp inherent in many boost pedal designs and the compression is just right. Engaging this pedal feels like switching to a higher gain channel of your amp....truly. It's fantastic! The Mercury III has found a home on the pedal boards of Fat Sound's owner as well as our shop manager.

From Spaceman

Mission: Mercury III / Freedom 7

May 5th, 1961 - Launch Complex 5 at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Alan B. Shepard sits, strapped inside an 11 x 6 foot tin can, attached to the top of an 84 foot Mercury-Redstone Rocket.

T-20 seconds and counting.

He is about to be shot 116 miles into the sky, at a speed of over 5,000 mph, experiencing up to 11 G's.

T-10 seconds and counting.

He will become the first American (and only the 2nd human) in space.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

While we will never know the true insanity of Mr. Shepard’s experience that day, Spaceman hopes to give you a similar experience, with the Mercury III: Germanium Harmonic Boost.

Capable of up to 11 G's of clean gain; the clean boost function alone can drive your tube-amp from a light breakup to thick, all-out distortion. Now you too can blast yourself (and your audience) into the outer limits of the universe.

The Mercury III also generates tube-like, even-order harmonics, which can then be mixed in with your original instrument signal, bringing more dimension and life to your tone. Set the Harmonic setting at minimum and you’ll have a clean boost. Turned to max, your tone is now twice as rich in harmonic content!

The unique tone control provides six (6) tone selections, which are interactive with the Boost and Harmonic controls. Together you can achieve a variety of settings, effectively making the Mercury III a Full boost, Treble boost, Bass boost and Mid boost all in one compact pedal!

Let's also not forget the included NOS 1966 germanium transistor for its wonderful vintage sparkle, heard especially in the treble boost settings.

Handmade in Portland Oregon, the Mercury III features an all discrete (no IC's!) tone path, military-spec wiring and the very highest quality components. Everything is neatly held in a super-duty USA-cast aluminum enclosure, topped with a durable engraved faceplate. The True Bypass switching is provided care-of the heaviest-duty mechanical footswitch available, for a long trouble-free life.

Each pedal is numbered on the nameplate, boasting it's limited availability, and in addition each one is signed and numbered on the inside. The Mercury III also comes with a transferable three year warranty, plus a lifetime discount repair plan.

Three (3) versions are available and are limited as follows: Copper Plated (1-10), White Powdercoat (1-30) and Raw Silver (1-80).

In addition to fancy coatings, the Copper and White versions (ONLY) feature vintage, NASA surplus dimmable indicator lights! Amber in color, the Copper edition uses a "hazard" style display, while the White uses a standard display. The Silver edition uses a jeweled indicator.

It's a tone enhancer that blurs the line between boost and overdrive. The Mercury III works with your guitar and amp to achieve a large variety of tones. Its features add life, sparkle, volume and thickness to the tones already present – and without compromise.
