Black Cat
Made in The USA since 1993
After production was discontinued in late 2007, Black Cat is back…and better than ever. Using the same great designs by Fred Bonte, this next generation of Black Cat Pedals has received a super-boutique makeover:
- high-quality components and PCBs
- top-notch build quality with consistent production
- eye-catching graphics and deluxe packaging
Not everything has changed, however — Black Cat Pedals are still individually hand-wired and made in the USA. Black Cat users have included Eric Johnson, Billy F. Gibbons, Trey Anastasio (Phish), Scott Henderson, Steve Lukather, Michael Landau, and countless others.

The Black Cat Mini Trem is a dual function tremolo/clean boost in one pedal. Part of the legacy of the original Black Cat line, the new Mini Trem sports some additional features and a spiffy new look. At the heart of this pedal is a classic, sixties-style tremolo with Speed and Depth controls. The circuit also incorporates a clean FET boost with controls for Boost and Tone. Finally, we’ve added a second stomp switch that allows for half-speed/double-speed switching, and an LED that flashes in time with the rate of the tremolo.
The tremolo and clean boost effects can function independently of one another, but the Mini Trem really shines by using the combination of all four controls, which yields the widest variety of tones and timbres available in any stompbox tremolo. The Black Cat Mini Trem lets you “voice” the sound of your tremolo, from a deep and swampy throb to a sharp staccato stutter.

The Black Cat OD-1 (a.k.a. Freddie Fuzz) is an original design Fred created based on the unique properties of the OP275, a dual operational amplifier chip made by Analog Devices. The OP275 is a high-quality op-amp that gives a distinctive linear output waveform. The Black Cat OD-1 can go from clean, to slightly crunchy, to all-out saturated distortion. It is unique in that it is extremely sensitive to the guitar; it responds to the player’s pick attack, and like a good Fuzz Face, it cleans up well when you roll back the volume on the guitar. The Black Cat OD-1 has been used by Scott Henderson, Steve Luthaker, Beck, Lyle Workman, Kyle Cook (Matchbox Twenty), and many others.

- Durable powder-coat “Holographic Sparkle” finish
- High-quality OP275 dual op-amp

The Black Cat Bee Buzz is our version of the original Roland Bee Baa, one of the classic icons of great vintage fuzz pedals. The Bee Buzz began as a Custom Shop project at the request of our Japanese distributor, who preordered twenty pedals. Our first prototype turned out so well, we decided to extend the run and made a total of fifty Black Cat Custom Bee Buzz pedals.
We started by examining an original Roland Bee Baa, to be sure we would have an accurate reference for the original circuit. But we quickly noted many areas in the Bee Baa that needed improvement, such as excessive noise and lack of balance between the tone settings. In addition, the “Treble Boost” in the original Bee Baa was not a feature that most players found useful – so we worked on making a boost mode that would appeal to the modern guitarist.
The Black Cat Custom Bee Buzz was an instant hit, and sold out without ever being officially announced. So we decided to make the Bee Buzz a permanent part of our regular Black Cat line, while preserving the expensive custom features of the original Bee Buzz, such as the paint and hardware.

The Black Cat Super Fuzz is a modern recreation of the original Univox Super Fuzz pedal that was made in Japan by Shin-ei in the seventies. The Super Fuzz, in its various iterations, has developed a cult following over the years and is now more popular than ever. Part of its distinct sound is derived from its two-stage octave doubling circuit — beneath the massive torrent of fuzz is a hint of upper octave; not quite as prominent as an Octavia, but definitely noticeable. The Black Cat Super Fuzz has been used by the Beastie Boys and J. Mascis.
