PWE Amplification

#1 PWE Amps Dealer in the World

PWE = Painting With Electrons. One of the coolest names for an amplifier company we've come across with tones, build quality and aesthetics that back up the cool factor of the name. PWE amplifiers are built one at a time by Ted Stevenson in his shop in Canada and offer up some of the most incredible and inspiring Marshall tones we've ever heard.

The Event Horizon is the closest thing we've found to an abridged encyclopedia of the best Big Iron British tones both Classic and Modern in one, simple to operate, three channel amplifier.

When we received our first Event Horizon, Fat Sound's owner demo'd this amp for a local customer who comes into the shop on a regular basis and he commented that he had never heard Stu play so well and that he must have really been practicing hard for the past 6 months. Stu replied that it had nothing to do, unfortunately, with practicing and everything to do with pure inspiration. If these amps don't make you play over your head.......nothing will.

Fat Sound's Take

The all new Event Horizon 3 from Ted Stevenson's Painting With Electrons is one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated releases for 2011!

I have easily found fantastic tones on all three channels with flawless, no compromise switching between the three with very linear gain increases.  I need a few days and many hours of play time before feeling confident of being able to write a review that is solid, contains no honeymoon hype and is based on concentrated and uninterrupted play time utilizing a wide variety of guitars and several different types and styles of cabinets and speakers.

The new version of PWE's Event Horizon has been completely re-designed to offer better, fuller and more dynamic cleans, a crunch mode that is a much needed channel between the clean and the highest gain channels......initial impression is that the EH3's new Crunch channel is similar in gain structure and overall sonic character to the Soldano SLO's crunch mode........and a third channel that, while still capable of the searingly fluid gain tones for which the original, dual channel Event Horizon was known for, addresses input from owners of the original design. Most, myself included, wanted a lower gain starting point with less-modern capabilities. It's immediately apparent that Ted has carefully redesigned the overall gain structure of the EH3 so that its new third channel.....the "Blow" channel.....starts off with a much lower gain, less compressed tone. Blow channel gain settings below 12:00 offer thick, meaty and complex Classic Rock and Blues based overdrive with a beautiful woodiness and definition achieved by using minimal pre-amp gain and maximum power tube overdrive. Blow Channel gain settings of noon and above bring this channel's gain level gradually into the more modern, fluid and infinitely sustaining realm; the gain and tone character which was more-or-less the starting point for the previous model's second channel. This alone is a massive leap forward in terms of the versatility of the new Event Horizon as well as the overall size of the market for which this amp will be the perfect choice!

The overall user interface has been simplified and cosmetics have been updated. The entire amplifier is extremely well thought out. Also new to the Event Horizon 3 is a serious amount of hand-wiring inside the exceptionally clean chassis. The new hybrid circuit build consists of a combination of PCB, as is almost always found in multi-channel, feature heavy amplifiers, and hand-wiring. Tube sockets and potentiometers are chassis mounted for long-life and elimination of potential thermal fatigue. Tube sockets, potentiometers and inter board connections are all accomplished via flying leads which utilize high-grade, solid core wire.

Ted has dramatically moved the Event Horizon forward with this  new release and has added a ton of labor intensity while keeping the price identical to that of the original EH. Quite the achievement at a time when the costs of everything required to build a high-quality amplifier have been rapidly rising!

The original EH was one of our best sellers in 2010. Even in light of the release of this new, 3 channel, updated model, the original still stand on its own as a truly fantastic amp. The new version, however, with its more linear transitions from big cleans of CH1 to very Soldano SLO Crunch mode like tones of the EH3's CH2 "Crunch" and onto the 3rd Channel called "Blow" will appeal to a much larger market!

The one complaint we heard about the original EH was that the second channel started off with a level of gain that some players wished it would gradually climb to. I tended to agree with this criticism even though I owned and loved the first version for what it was......a 2 channel amp with a great clean channel and an excellent, high-gain modern channel.

The beloved tones of the original are still available in the new Event Horizon 3, but it's the new stuff in between these tones as well as the improved user interface that not only kicks this new amp up a rather large notch on the versatility scale, but will also dramatically increase the size of the market that finds the Event Horizon the perfect channel switcher for their varied needs.

Oh, and before going any farther with my review, it's important to note that Ted has not only added a channel and improved the UI, but he's also managed to keep the prices of both 50 and 100 watt versions the same at $2699.00 and $2999.00 respectively. And.....as if that weren't enough there is a ton more hand-wiring inside the beautiful chassis. On that note, there are several, very clean PCB's inside the amp just as you would expect in any multi-channel amp, but tube sockets, potentiometers are all chassis mounted and there is a tone of flying lead work that would be considered point-to-point. Essentially this is a hybrid build style that leans more towards the hand-wired style. Also very impressive for a multi-channel amplifier at this price point.
