Greer Amplification

I first played a CAM 18 a few years ago and knew immediately that it brought something wholly new and exciting to a market flooded with mediocre "boutique" amplifiers. A super thick, creamy, simplistic amp that drew inspiration out of me like drawing water from a well. It took a while, but Fat Sound Guitars™ is proud to welcome Greer Amplification in to our family of the finest amplifiers available.

From Nick Greer:

"What is now known as Greer Amplification, began in 1998. We started out making pedals for friends, and ourselves, but somehow the word got out, and as a result the demand for our products increased. I don't think we quite knew what we were getting into, but I'm glad we did. With dealers all across the US, and the world, we pride ourselves on making the finest, toughest, best sounding effects pedals and amplifiers on the market.

At Greer Amplification we only use the finest quality components in all of our products. The same amount of detail and care goes into building each item we send out of the shop, whether it be our simplest pedal or our most complex amplifier. We know what it is like to be a working musician. We know what is it like to have to depend on gear night after night. That's why we overbuild every product we make. That's why every product we sell comes with our fully backed warranty. If you love our products, we want to hear about it. If you have problems or suggestions we want to hear about them as well. We believe strongly on working with customers on a one-to-one basis to help them find their sound with our products. Try getting that from a "big" company!

I would like to personally thank those who have backed us through the years. Without your support and patronage none of this would be possible."

"One of the best sounding, single channel amps we offer, the CAM 18 is a fantastic, dual 6V6 amp with the signature thick midrange growl those tubes offer, that is both defined yet meaty and complex in a very affordable, great looking package.

I love simplicity, but also like having some versatility and found that even with only a Volume, Tone and Gain knob that the interactivity of these knobs allows for a very broad range of sounds and that I could get in to Brownface territory or the early 70's Marshall realm of overdrive/distortion with ease.

This is one of those great amplifiers that takes a page from several classic books and re-writes history via a unique design that ultimately offers both wonderful sounding and feeling cleans and amazingly thick and rich overdrive tones with minimal potentiometer tweaks.

When running the Volume at 11:00 or below you have that fantastic Brownface feel. Percussive, warm with just the perfect amount of compression so that the amp just *feels* right under your fretting fingers. Add a touch of delay or reverb in front of the amp in these settings and you have eargasmic cleans. These tones are incredibly lush with fantastic bloom and swirl and a focused low-end. Crank the Volume knob to 1:00 or above and an entire world of intoxicating pushed overdrive to thick Texas crunch is right there and......it's perfect with a tight and focused low-end and no harsh upper mid or top end frequencies to be found.

Even at these settings you can choose a lower output pickup position on your guitar. Lighten your attack or roll back your guitar's volume and achieve a barely dirty clean tone with great sustain and a nice amount of push. This is where the amp becomes a virtual channel switching amp with variable control based solely on your picking hand's technique.

It's simplicity and gorgeous tones at their best. One of the best single channel amps I've ever played and amazingly inspirational. This has got to be one of the best amps for Texas Blues and Classic Rock ever built"

Chime you didn't know 6v6's were capable of!

Ever wished that a 20 watt Plexi and an AC15 had a bastard child with an attitude problem? That's the Cam 18!

Punchy low end that only EL84's could only dream of, and chime you'd never expect from a pair of 6v6's! But with that sweet solid smooth low mid push that's so lacking in many of today's lower wattage amps. The knob layout of the amplifier features Volume, Tone, and Master Volume. Unlike many master volume designs, the Greer master volume design is transparent, and pleasantly functional allowing the player to achieve overdriven, and semi-overdriven tones are reasonable volumes. The Cam goes from clean to scream with an amazingly versatile tone control. Can also run 6L6's without rebiasing for more headroom.

Comes standard with racing stripes on front panel which is how we order them.

Specifications:

  • Power Output: 18-25 Watts
  • Output Tubes: 2 x 6V6 (18 watts) or 2 x 6L6 (25 watts)
  • Cathode Biasing enables plug and play swapping from 6V6 tubes to 6L6 power tubes
  • Preamp Tubes: 2 x 12AX7
  • Rectifier: 1 x 5AR4
  • Controls: Volume, Tone, Master

Matching 112 cab with Cane Grille and Celestion G12H30 12" speaker for an additional $599.99

"Hi Stu,

I received the Greer CAM 18 yesterday and messed around it with it at home to get acquainted. I also gigged it for two sets last night at a medium-sized club in downtown Colorado Springs.

Here are my impressions:

I have to say I was nervous about the amp because I bought it pretty much based on your appraisal, and one never knows how much is music-store owner hype and how much is truth. It was also $1,000 less than I usually pay for a head, so I was beginning to think this amp might not measure up to my Komet 19 head, which I paid $2,300 for. Moreover, I was nervous about gigging a brand new amp, but I also had my Komet head with me in case the Greer wasn't up to speed.

My initial impression is that what you say in your write-up is dead on. The amp sounds full and throaty and breaks up beautifully with single coils and humbuckers. It also cut through the mix well.

For the gig I set all controls at 7 and used a pedal for extra push on some rhythms and leads.

At home I put it through my Alex Attenuator, and that worked well, but I was happy to find that the amp isn't stupid loud (my Komet 19 watt is as loud as 40 watters, which is kind of a bummer because I bought it online thinking it might be as loud as a Deluxe Reverb. Hardly.)

I plan to use it next Saturday for an outdoor gig in which we will be going through a highly professional PA with my amp mic'd.

Again, this is a cautious appreciation. I need to gig it more and mess around it with it at home over the weekend, but at this point I am impressed with the amp and your very accurate appraisal."
