Germino

Proud to be the #1 Germino Dealer Year After Year!

Fat Sound Guitars' relationship with Greg Germino spans the greater part of the last two decades. Germino is one of the world's foremost authorities on Vintage Marshall amplifier circuits; the 60's amplifiers that defined the 'Tones of the Gods'. These are the signature sounds of Rock-n-Roll that many of us grew up listening to and that created the soundtracks of our youth. Every guitarist remembers the first time they heard Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Allman, Kossoff, etc.....These were the pivotal moments that captured our imagination and inspired many of us to learn to play guitar.

Greg Germino has not only spent decades locating and purchasing exceptional examples of '60's vintage Marshalls, but has completely reverse engineered and blueprinted them many times over to discover what makes the standout examples sound and feel the way they do. Greg uses this knowledge to ensure every amplifier that he builds represents not just vintage Marshall tones, but those rare and truly exceptional examples. In our opinion, Germino amps are actually the best Vintage Marshalls ever built.

From the smallest of details such as his UK sourced, original style Castelco 'Black Bat' switches, "Cheese Head" transformer bolts and custom, hand-made impedance and voltage selector knobs to the critical selection of highly accurate replica transformers, chassis materials and capacitors Greg has spared no expense and left no stone unturned to bring Classic Marshall loyalists the finest, most faithful British recreations available.

Built one-at-a-time...personally...by Greg Germino in his Saxapahaw, NC workshop since 2002.... each Germino amplifier is an heirloom piece in the best Classic Marshall tradition.

Fat Sound's Take

The JMP-50 amps of the late 60's are some of our all time favorites. The reduced headroom and earlier breakup versus the 100 watt Super Lead models is generally more useable in today's club environment when gain levels beyond  'Big Bold Clean' or 'Mildly Pushed and Overdriven' are desired. The 'Lead' circuit also creates a more aggressive, top-end-centric gain at 3:00 and beyond on the amplifier's Volume control settings which is fantastic for recreating the Higher Gain Classic Rock tones. A fantastic amp for recreating tones ranging from Jimmy Page (Standard version recommended) to Eddie Van Halen (LoVo version recommended) just to name a few....at volumes that won't alienate club owners!

From Greg Germino

The Lead 55 models use a classic dual EL-34 output section and "lead" circuit values. Both the standard and LV models are voiced the same with the only difference being the power transformer in the LV model supplies lower voltage at the output stage for decreased headroom and overall volume. Filtering is the same in each model and is period correct for 68/69 JMP-50 specs.

An incredible sounding amplifier with all the classic late 60's and early 70's sounds. Goes from a slightly crunchy clean to a thick smooth lead tone with just a twist of the guitar's volume control. This is the sound of the famed 1968/69 plexi 1987 model at it's very best.

[New for 2011] For 2011, Germino Amplifiers introduces the 30 watt, 'Lo Volt' version of the Classic 45. Offering earlier breakup to achieve that famously thick, organic Germino Overdrive at lower volumes. The new LoVo version replaces the standard Cassic 45's Power Transformer with the same Drake 1202-118 Power Transformer Replica as used in the popular Lead 55LoVo model.

From Greg Germino

The Classic 45 faithfully replicates the tone of an original JTM-45, only better! This amp is a delight to play being just at home doing "Beano" era Clapton as it is replicating AC/DC to early ZZ Top. The Classic 45 goes from an amazing clean tone to the best crunchy overdriven sounds imaginable. Excellent bottom end, incredible frequency response and exceptional 3D balance are all there to enjoy. The Classic 45 takes pedals extremely well and is not overly compressed sounding.

Fat Sound's Take

The Club 40 offers tremendous tones ranging from flawless 60's British cleans to modest, but smooth and creamy overdrive all available via your pick attack or the guitar's volume control. The tones are extremely organic with a beautiful, percussive quality.

Check out the 5th photo above for Greg's ingenious rear panel solution to hiding the solid state/tube rectifier switch to maintain cosmetics purity while retaining ease of access.

Every detail of a Germino is perfection and the tone and feel astounding!

From Greg Germino

The Club 40 is the defining early sound of the JTM-50 and JMP-50 Bass 50 watt heads. The amp uses an JTM/Bass circuit voiced for a flat frequency response. GZ-34 rectifier and ss rectifier are selectable by a switch allowing for the softer rounder feel of a JTM-50 or in ss mode the quicker pick attack and response of a JMP-50 Bass head.

In tube rectifier setting the Club 40 is like a JTM-50, moving from big beautiful clean tones to bold crunch effortlessly. In ss rectifier setting you have an exact JMP-50 watt model 1986. The tighter feel of the solid state rectifier adds punch and more immediate response from players pick attack.

The Club 40 excels with either single coils or humbuckers. Very responsive to volume control adjustments from the guitar and instantly gives the user extreme flexibility running the amp with or without pedals. An array of early tones that go from incredible cleans to the definition of British crunch. Pushed, the Club 40 easily gives effortless response and singing single note lines. The perfect amp for a semi clean/slightly distorted tone with single coil or humbucking pickups. The Club 40 covers a very wide range of stellar tones and paired with either a 2 X 12 or 4 X 12 cab gives instant sounds of late 60's classic rock.

Fat Sound's Take

Greg's Monterey, a 100% accurate recreation of the '66 JTM45/100 is sonically similar to his Club 40 (Greg's selectable rectification recreation of the JMP-50/JTM-50 models), but with a bigger 'feel', like your string guage just went up 4 sizes, but at its sweet spot, the quad KT66 powered Monterey is only 1 dB louder than the dual EL34 powered Club 40 running at its sweet spot!

The Monterey's Drake power transformer being tapped for 500vdc (versus the '66 JTM45/100 stock spec' of 560vdc) to work more reliably with current production KT66 tubes probably has a lot to do with this since headroom is reduced a bit versus the same circuit running at 560vdc. The Drake Power transformer can be tapped for the stock 560vdc via its set of secondary windings, but the difference is too subtle to justify the extra punishment this inflicts on the amp's power tubes. Tons of trial-and-error has led to the conclusion that 500vdc is a perfect voltage to retain The Tone while increasing reliability.

So the Monterey is Vintage Marshall/Classic Rock loud, but not full on late-60's 'Super Lead Loud' like Germino's Fillmore or Headroom 100 models. I actually find the Monterey to be very useable and could make it work in a rock trio playing most medium sized or larger clubs.

This is a fantastic amp at all volumes and when paired with the Germino 412 cab loaded with either Greenback Reissues or Scumbacks is the ultimate in Hendrixian tone circa the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival for which Greg has named this model.

While we consider the Monterey an excellent choice for achieving early Hendrix style tones with a Strat, this is no one trick pony. For example, plugging into Ch 2 with a Les Paul and pushing Treble, Mid and Presence creates flawless Clapton-era Cream tones. Many of the most desirable Classic Tones of The Gods are available via this amp.

The Monterey's 500vdc, KT-66 power section offers less overall headroom as well as more top-end shimmer and glassiness versus the thicker low-mid push of the high headroom, EL34 powered Fillmore 100. The differences are relatively subtle unless played back-to-back, but one of the two will undoubtedly best suit a particular player's needs. We can cut through the confusion and really help our customers decide which of Greg's amps will be the perfect tool for achieving their most desired tones.

We've stacked all of Germino's Big-Iron offerings on top of one another and gone back and forth for hours tweaking and really studying the sonic differences between these amps. These in-depth comparo's have not only been a lot of fun, but have been critical for helping us really understand the differences between the Monterey, Fillmore and Headroom 100 amplifiers.

We look forward to utilizing our knowledge of these amplifiers to consult with you and help you choose the best Germino for your needs!

From Greg Germino

This amplifier was made to fully capture the tone and vibe of the early Marshall Super Amplifier. The most fabled performance being the Jimi Hendrix Experience at Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967 hence the name Monterey 100. These early 4 KT-66 powered amplifiers with very low filtering produce a unique tone that was used by many greats in early recordings. The Monterey 100 fully captures the tone AND feel of these early amps with the addition of unparalleled reliability and quiet operation. The early tones of Hendrix, Free, Cream and others are readily available for those who have trained their hands and hearts in the musical sense.

These product specifications apply to Germino models 2011 only, not earlier product.

Fat Sound's Take

Greg Germino's amplifiers prove beyond any reasonable doubt that for many of the best classic guitar tones there really is no substitute for a Big Iron, British-style amplifier plugged into a period-correct, finger-jointed 4x12 cab. Whether you're after the iconic tones of Page, early Rev. Billy, Hendrix, Kossoff, Beck, Eddie, Cream-era Clapton or all of the above.... you just gotta move some air. As the saying goes "They just don't build 'em like they used to"! Fortunately our good friend Greg Germino actually does!!

Where the Monterey, another of my personal favorites, is the "Monterey Festival" Hendrix tone, the Fillmore's Stratocaster tones lean more towards the Stevie Ray Vaughn camp. But wait......Stevie's known for primarily using blackface combos?!?! True, but, among other amps, he was also known for using Marshalls in the studio, but more importantly I've never come close to his pushed or overdriven tones through any un-modified 60's American amp. I have, however, come as close as I can hope to achieving some of my favorite tones from  "El Mocambo" via the Fillmore. Check out Stevie's tone on his "Live at the El Mocambo" version of 'Texas Flood' for an excellent reference.

With a Les Paul, The Fillmore allows me to come similarly close to the clean and pushed tones of The Great Paul Kossoff. Kossoff's clean to pushed Marshall tones are some of my all-time favorite rock-n-roll tones from the late 60's early 70's and had a profound impact on me as a guitarist. While it's as much Kossof's feel as his tone that has always moved me, his ability to evoke such a clear sense of 'Rock-n-Roll' via cleaner tones has always impressed me and helped me to learn to play without necessarily relying on a lot of gain.

Being able to come so close to both Kossoff's Les Paul tones and SRV's "El Mocambo" Strat tones means that the Fillmore is an amp that allows me to achieve two of the tones that have had the biggest influence on me as a guitarist. We should all be so fortunate to find such an amp!

Where the Monterey has a bit more detailed shimmer up top due to its KT-66 based power section, the Fillmore has more low-mid girth with a softer, more rounded top end while offering clear, clean low end. Being primarily a Blues and Blues Rock player with an emphasis on Texas Blues and late-60's through early 70's style Rock-n-Roll, the Fillmore is the amp I personally use for the truly Big Sounds. I love it with my Thorn R/S (Strat) and I love it with my solid mahogany, dual humbucker Collings City Limits.

The wattage and pure volume of the Fillmore scares off a lot of today's players, but this amp is the answer to the question we're asked nearly every day: "How did the great Rock-n-Roll guitarists from the late 60's and 70's get that sound?!"

No, it won't do Bedroom Volume, Plexi on "10" tones....I've yet to hear an amp that truly does. Greg's purest nature means that he is adamantly opposed to Master Volume circuits being added to these amps......and we don't really recommend buying a Fillmore if you'll be straddled with having to use an attenuator most of the time, but if you can crank it up and really want to hear and feel The Classic Big Iron tone then this amp, along with Germino's Monterey and Headroom 100 models are the amps to consider.

While the Fillmore needs to have its volume control up to about 3:00 to really start to bring on the overdrive there are gorgeous clean tones to be had in the lower volume ranges. The Fillmore also cleans up beautifully with a slight twist of your guitar's volume knob. Our Fillmore customers actually tell us that they thoroughly enjoy even the low volume clean tones they get out of this amp.....partially because it truly lets the sonic qualities of their favorite guitars come through.

Now that I've finished beating my chest and preaching the virtues of Classic Rock volume levels in order to achieve Classic Rock tones let me take a step back and say that cranking these Big Iron Bad Boys to paint peeling levels, while ideal in many ways and certainly a lot of fun, is not entirely necessary. Many if not most of the great Classic Rock tones were achieved in the studio with pedals pushing Big Iron. And....pedals, overdrive and distortion units in particular, have come a long, long way since the 60's and 70's. Using a pedal like the Xotic FX EP Boost, Fulltone Plimsoul or Stigtronix Rodent (just to name three of my personal favorites) makes it possible to achieve truly fantastic, organic tones at modern club volume levels while retaining dynamics. I love having the opportunity to really move some air, but it's not entirely necessary in order to create fantastic tones with Greg's 75-100 watt amplifiers.......it's just more thrilling.

I love, own and use this amp!

-Stu Carter, owner Fat Sound Guitars

As with all Germino amplifiers, the Fillmore is an extremely accurate reproduction of the Marshall circuit upon which it is based; in this case the 1967 JTM-100. The interior construction is absolutely flawless and obviously wired by a man who is as fanatical as he is passionate about the old British amplifiers. Greg goes as far as to source the original, round-style, Black Bat switches from the U.K. for the Mains and Standby. He modifies existing knobs for the rear panel's impedance and voltage selector pot's so that they have the look of the originals, his front and rear panels are accurate, he pays three times more per yard for his vinyl than is really necessary in order to obtain the most period correct covering and he is constantly trying every new British-style tube that comes to market in a never-ending quest to make his amps absolutely perfect. Every detail is as accurate as is possible and each Germino is painstakingly dialed in to sound like a particularly great example of the Classic amp upon which it's based.

From Greg Germino

Lets roll back in time to 1967. It's early in that year that Marshall made the switch from KT-66 tubes to EL-34's with new transformers for this tube type. These are the second series Drake transformers made. 1203-80 power, 1202-119 output with no 4 ohm tap and 1202-132 with a tap for 4 ohms. Unique to these new models was a reverse typeset JTM lettering on the front panel which is affectionately know today as “Black Flag”. Later models would simply say JTM-100. Unique was a dual bridge rectifier being fed from two individual high voltage AC secondary windings of the power transformer. All of these early amps used a Bass circuit derived from the JTM-45. Steel chassis made their debut in early in 67 as well.

This amp reproduces great sounds of old from Hendrix, Free and others of the day. Big clean and round at lower volumes to incredible semi broken tones when pushed. A fantastic crunch rhythm amp, and great for cleaner solo work. Excellent with pedals or a fuzz face. Similar to a JTM-45/100 but with a firmer feel and the unmistakable sound of EL-34's.

Germino “Fillmore” – Resuscitate The Dream

The amazing and organic rock and blues guitar tones of the 1960’s and 70’s (Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kossof etc.) infected me and drew me into the world of playing guitar. However, that classic tone structure was elusive and the pursuit often frustrating. Over the past 40 years I have used many great amplifiers and enjoyed many great tones, but that classic organic quality I sought always just eluded me. To my ear, there simply is no substitute for that early Marshall sweet musical growl. For me, the Germino Fillmore captures these tones like no other amplifier built today. The Fillmore provides that magic, organic, throaty, percussive, musical quality I love, with full thick meaty highs and tight focused lows. It is impressively dynamic and detailed in response to touch. The tone and feel are truly spectacular at higher volumes; at lower volumes it is cleaner and sweeter but remains impressively full and very fun and useable. Now I don’t think so much about getting the tone, I just play with the enthusiasm I had when I was 15.

Follow the Dream…..

Life is short. If your musical pursuits are governed by spousal, or the neighbor’s, limitations on gear, volume, playing time etc.. GET A NEW SPOUSE, MOVE AND TURN UP THE VOLUME! [Fat Disclaimer] We at Fat Sound do not advocate divorce in the name of guitar tone......moving however......yeah.......we'll go along with that! '-)

From Greg Germino

Slightly over 40 years ago the sound of modern rock-n-roll took a significant step forward with the introduction of the “Super Lead” 100 watt amplifiers.

The Headroom 100 specifically emulates the sound and construction of the very early 68 100 watt plexi panel Super Lead and Super Bass amplifiers to exact detail! From the very first glance of the zinc plated steel chassis and plexi panels to the perforated tag board assembly the workmanship and attention to detail is simply stunning. The early Super Leads from 68 were the first to use a circuit specifically voiced for “lead” guitar with split cathode pre-amp, specific values in the tone section and output stage as well as a brite cap for an “automatic brightening” of the amp at low volume. The Headroom 100 is available with either a “Super Lead” circuit for the ultimate in singing sustain or, Super Bass circuit values for those wanting a cleaner amp with a more rounded tone.

The sounds of the Headroom 100 are bold and tight with an extremely percussive attack that tracks with every detail the players touch. Bottom end is big, full and tight, an attribute of the four valves and power supply.

The Super Lead version hits the area of singing sustain around 6 on the volume control. Great upper midrange crunch, smooth warm sustain and quick percussive attack.

The Super Bass version is a cleaner amp with Bass circuit values and has a rounder tone/flat frequency response. This amp is great for a bold clean a/la SRV/Hendrix style with a strat. Very fitting for Malcom Young type riffing as well, bold, punchy and just the right amount of crunch.

Owner's Comments

"Oh yeah man.....tonight was it!!

The engineer wanted the amp in the control room and cab isolated. So, I really couldn't hear what the amp had. Being it was the first time I fired it up I basically cranked it to 8 and used your settings; the settings it had when it arrived.

I could hear that amp growlin in the far other room...the sound over the monitors divine.

My Comrade in rock has a solo on the song we were working on, so I had him cut it on the White Germ. That gave me the chance to sneak into the room with the cab, sit in front of nearly full-on, big iron tone and blow dry my hair with the sonic waves!!!

Wow. A first in my life.To hear such pure vintage tone, warmth and clarity...beauty.

Thanks Greg for the art and the love of your art.

Thank you Stu for making this happen; for pointing me in the right direction...like a mad conductor of The ToneGizz Orchestra. Love you for it."

Why Pay Extra For EC Collins Pinstripe Cloth?

Mainly for Looks......Possibly for Sound!

Don't be fooled by less expensive versions of this grille cloth. This is as close to the the real deal as it comes and of much higher quality than other, similar looking, cloths available and sold online via various websites.

At $400.00, choosing this optional grille cloth is quite an extravagance, but for those who are as obsessive about getting the right look as well as the right tone this added expense will be well worth it.

Used briefly by Marshall from late 1965 through early 1968, this quality of "Pinstripe" cloth had been unavailable for over 40 years. Finally there is an entrepreneurial, Marshall fanatic who decided to reproduce it properly in all its glory. The exclusive Silk Screening process is not a cheap digital reproduction, but rather has the exact look and incredible silky feel and, more importantly, sonic properties of the original material.

Seeing, feeling and, yes, hearing this cloth in person will make a convert out of almost any die hard Marshall fan.

The sound of Hendrix and Bluesbreaker-era Clapton are partially attributed to the unique tonal qualities of this grille cloth material

The process involved in reproducing this cloth is extremely labor intensive and to date, Greg Germino was the first Plexi-style amp builder bold enough to invest in this cloth and offer it to his clients who are among the most discerning Marshall fanatics.

Since this cloth purchased separately costs $510.00 for a piece large enough for a single 412 cab, you are actually saving over $110.00 by ordering it pre-installed on one of Greg's cabinets. Greg sells this option at his cost.

From EC Collins' Website

It took nearly a year to just source the correct "open weave" base fabric, which is loomed at one of the finest mills in Europe. This is the only exact match to the original 1960s base fabric still being manufactured in the world today! My wholesale cost for this base fabric, is actually more per-yard than the retail price of the wholly inaccurate "Reissue" Bluesbreaker Grill Cloth. With this authentic base fabric in hand, it undergoes an entirely HANDMADE process, which takes nearly five hours to complete and took over a year of full-scale prototyping to perfect!

It takes 18 precise steps to transform a yard of base fabric into a yard of True 'Bluesbreaker Pinstripe'.

Still not convinced the tonal difference justifies the expense:

"In fact, I refer to the Bluesbreaker-type cloths in particular as 'tone cloths,' because they are of such a heavy weave that they alter the sound."
