Dr. Z

Before taking on the Z line in 1999 We had never experienced a response to an amp line like the one we have had to these incredible amps. Before the first models ever hit the floor we were taking orders and the initial backlog quickly ran 20 months. since that time we have sold over 1000 Dr Z amps.

Not only does Dr Z offer an incredibly rich, harmonically complex and dynamic, hand-wired, amp, but his flagship models such as the Maz 18 Non-Reverb, Mazerati GT and Remedy have got to be heard and felt to be fully appreciated.

Today, each one of Z's amps are still meticulously hand-wired one at a time. Each one is a perfect example of what a small amp builder, with an exceptional ear for tone, is capable of. Utilizing unique, yet simple circuits and extremely high quality components, Dr Z has created some of the finest amps ever produced for guitarists. Check out the models here on our site and then email or call us to discuss them in detail.

Most shipments from Dr Z are sold in advance, but due to the large quantity of amplifiers we keep on order typical delivery time is only 3 weeks on items not already in stock.

Reasonably priced, built like tanks, and incredibly toneful.

"As Dr Z's 7th dealer and the first Dr Z dealer to really get behind the line and to work diligently to make the marketplace aware of these incredible amplifiers, Fat Sound has sold more Dr Z amplifiers than any other Dr Z dealer in the world. Dr Z's best selling amplifier, the Non-Reverb version of the MAZ 18, is an amplifier that was built at my request and even after 10 years continues to be one of our best sellers year after year as well as Dr Z's best seller overall.
Fat Sound Guitars is The most experienced Dr Z dealer in the country, has been involved in helping to develop some of the best selling models in Z's lineup and, because of this, is considered by many to be among the top choices of shops from which to buy your new Dr Z Amp.
Since we essentially introduced the world to Dr Z Amplifiers in 1998 we have had the honor of taking the Top Dr Z Dealer award 9 times"

Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW**

Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW** Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW** Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW** Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW** Brake-Lite SA (Stand Alone) **NEW**

Same great design and incredible ability to reduce volume without meaningful tonal degredation as the Brake-Lite, but with an enclosed back for use without mounting inside a combo or open-back cabinet.

From Dr Z

You asked for for it and we listened...Introducing the fully enclosed Brake Lite SA (Stand Alone.) Same guts as the combo mount Brake Lite, but able to be tossed in the gig bag for use with many different amps on the fly. The Brake Lite SA works with any tube amp up to 45 watts and can be used with 4, 8, or 16, ohm loads. The SA features 2 speaker outs that are wired in parallel. You can now run multiple cabs with ease.

The Brake Lite SA measures 6”x 5” x 3 1⁄4” and weighs in at 1 1⁄2 lbs. Four 1⁄2” feet give plenty of clearance for resting on top of your amp.

At the Zero setting the Brake Lite SA is fully by-passed.

Each click yields more attenuation:
1=2dB, 2=5dB, 3=8dB, and 4=11dB.

Always use speaker cable to connect the Brake Lite SA to your speaker.

When connecting a second cab you will be making a parallel load. Ex: a pair of 8 ohm cabs use the 4 ohm speaker out on your amp.

he Non-Reverb version of the MAZ 18 was built at the request of Fat Sound Guitars and released as a new model in 2002.

The idea behind removing the reverb was that it would remove some signal restrictions within the amp a bit adding to the openness, bass response, touch sensitivity and gain. the difference is relatively minor, but definitely noticeable and frankly, the MAZ 18 is so multi-dimensional and complex that for most applications reverb just isn't necessary.

When reverb *is* necessary or desired you have an FX loop that works beautifully with a wide range of reverb effect pedals as well as stand-alone units like the excellent Z Verb. So, when you want reverb you can have it, but when you want the best dry tone possible you have that too.

The dynamic range of this amplifier, which is addressable simply by changing attack or guitar, without ever touching the amp's controls is a huge part of why it has been our best seller for 8 years. This comes in very handy for live players!

Tone Stack Bypass Mod

This new mod for the MAZ 18 NR is a footswitchable bypass for the bass, mid and treble tone stack part of the amp's circuit. It opens the amp up considerably and increases overall gain and volume considerably. The Cut control is still active allowing the player to control top-end content and match the amp's cutting frequencies to the room or guitar. When engaged the amp becomes extremely sensitive to guitar volume control inputs. Rolled back to 2, my Grosh Electrajet is swirly and clean with an almost Vox like chime and shimmer. if I roll the guitar's volume up to about half way I get a mild, singing overdrive and with the volume all the way up it's gain city with tons of harmonically complex crunch that's perfect for rock rhythm. A very cool mod and a must have addition at $150.00.

Z-Wreck head and 2x12 cab **Coming Soon** Z-Wreck head and 2x12 cab **Coming Soon**

Available 4th Quarter 2010. Little is known about this amp other than the obvious which is that, based on the name of the amp and Mike Zaite's close personal relationship with Ken Fischer, late of Trainwreck Amps, and given that Dr Z Amplifiers have used Trainwreck designed transformers and offered their own version of Ken's attenuator for years, we are assuming that the new Z-Wreck will be the closest thing to the real Trainwreck amps since Ken became too ill to build in the early 90's.

We'll see......everything is conjecture at this point as we have not heard this amp and Z has been pretty secretive about it. The attendees of Z Fest 2010 did get a taste of the Z-Wreck and everyone I have spoken with seemed mighty excited by it.

We are taking deposits against the first 5 we will receive. The deposits are refundable. I've owned 2 Trainwrecks, a Liverpool and an Express. I know them well and when I review this amplifier it will be carefully scrutinized for its sonic comparisons to the original Trainwreck amplifiers. No hyperbole or hype, just my straight up impression of how the amp compares to Ken's work as well as how it stands on its own. Anything less would dishonor Ken's name and I know that Mike Zaite brings this amp to the table with the utmost respect for his friend and mine, Ken Fischer.

Available only as a head and cabinet and only in Silver tolex with Black Flame maple front panel with new grille cloth that is very Scandinavian in design.

Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator Brake-Lite Attenuator

The Z Brake Lite Attenuator will be right at home mounted inside your combo amp. Perfect for dialing in your combo to its sweet spot while dialing back the volume level.
The Brake Lite works with any tube amp up to 45 watts and can be used with 4, 8, or 16, ohm loads. Very simple to install, the Brake Lite mounts with 2 screws and has a hardwired speaker cable to plug into the amp chassis. Plug the speaker into the Brake Lite and you are ready to go.

Please note: the Brake Lite is NOT a stand alone unit and needs to be mounted in a combo for proper operation.

We sell an average of 10 of these per week and have a less than 1% return ratio making it the most successful and loved Attenuator we have ever carried and we have carried almost all of them. It just, simply works beautifully and without tonal degradation.

Price above reflects the addition of a, pre-installed, Brake-Lite attenuator at the $100.00 introductory price. This is a $169.00 unit if purchased separately

The new, 20 watt Dr Z Monza 110 combo is the love child of the Carmen Ghia and the Mazerati GT yet manages to find its own voice. This amazing amplifier is small in size and very reasonable in price, but offers fantastic clean tones with wonderful bloom and sustain that morph into a thick crunch. As the gain control spins clockwise you ultimately land in infinite, overdriven sustain territory with no harsh frequencies to be found anywhere along the way.

The Red Fang 10" speaker is the perfect complement to this amplifier and the optional addition of the wildly successful Brake-Lite for a $100.00, introductory offer, upcharge creates a grab-and-go amplifier with a tone and volume range that allows the guitarist to cover a huge variety of musical styles and venue sizes from living rooms to medium sized clubs and from Jazz to Classic Rock and Blues.

We at Fat Sound love the Mazerati GT, an amp that was initially built as a one-off for the owner of Fat Sound, but we also realized it was too loud for many of our clients. About a year ago we started asking for an amp that was essentially a "Junior" version of the Mazerati GT and the result is the Monza.....an amp that just sings and sings with a combination of tight, punchy lows and wonderful articulation that will leave you convinced the amp is sporting a 12" speaker and twice the power despite its diminutive size and lower volume capabilities.

From Dr Z's website

"The Monza continues the Dr Z tradition of simple is more. Three knobs, two 12AX7s, a pair of EL84s, and a 5AR4 are all that’s needed. The Monza is a gain and sustain monster. It excels at giving your fingers back what they put in with the feel and response of an amp 5x its power. Chords ring strong while single notes rise and bloom. It’s like harnessing the power and response of a 100 watt stack without clearing the first 20 rows. The term “Billy in a Box” has been used to describe the Monza. It’s that and so much more.

The Monza features Volume, Drive, and Tone controls. This isn’t your traditional master volume set up. The volume controls the overall output while the drive adds more sustain and depth as you turn it up. Notes just keep getting bigger and bigger.

The 1x10 features the Red Fang alnico 10 made by Eminence. This is an awesome sounding combination in a very portable package."

"Stu,

I got the Monza today and it seems to be in great shape and I played it clean this evening and I LOVE the clean tones...the Monza doesn't sound like any of my other amps and I completely lost track of time playing tonight!  The cleans are beautiful and seem an interesting blending of a thick woody tone with a bit of bite or crispness around the edge of the notes.  I like the cleans with humbuckers best so far and I can't wait to check out the gainy tones tomorrow (when my wife leaves the house, lol).  Thanks so much for your expert advice and guidance as always.  This amp is clearly a keeper and I am really glad to have it!!"

From Dr Z's website

"The Z-28 is a 6V6 based amp. It utilizes the format of the Route 66, that is, a EF-86 pre- amp, a unique Volume, Bass, and Treble full drive tone stack, and a tube rectified power supply. The Z-28 is rated at approximately 22 watts, so it fits under the Route 66 and the KT-45. It has a more American type tone, which some have described as Brown Tolexed Deluxe. The sweet sparkle of the 6V6 is ever present, along with a smooth full distortion at a very useable volume level. I have maintained a very tight bottom end, something that has been lacking in some 6V6 designs. Electro-Harmonix 6V6 at a reasonable 375 Volt plate level, I was very impressed with this tube and knew I had to design an amp which used it."

The 210 version, once broken in a bit, is a tad creamier than the 112. There's no hard and fast rule, but even though either the 112 or the 210 work for a very wide range of musical style I generally say that the 210 leans more towards either country or blues and that the 112 is a bit more of a blues, blues/rock configuration.

A best selling amplifier since 2002.

JAZ 20/40 Head JAZ 20/40 Head JAZ 20/40 Head JAZ 20/40 Head JAZ 20/40 Head JAZ 20/40 Head

With Z's most obvious nod yet to Classic Americana tones, the new JAZ 20/40 comes loaded with a quad of 6V6 power tube which can be operated in full 40 watt power or via Z's proprietary Half Power, 20 watt mode.

The JAZ 20/40 includes a superb, deep reverb effect, wide ranging and sweet tremolo, an amazing array of tones for such a simple control layout and a super sharp new cosmetic treatment.

In typical Z fashion, the front panel has been kept simple and easy to use with just the following controls:

Volume - determines the level of power section drive
Treble
Mid
Bass
Reverb
Speed & Depth for controlling the tremolo circuit.

With a range of tones from huge, fat cleans to pushed cleans and smooth overdrive the JAZ 20/40 covers the entire spectrum of American style tones and at higher Volume settings dips briefly, but convincingly in to mid 60's British tones with very few controls.

The half power switch which is located on the rear panel allows for a 50% reduction in output power for a very usable and welcomed drop in headroom for smaller rooms or when earlier breakup is desired, but without any loss of tone.

The bass control is extremely wide ranging and well dialed in allowing the player to choose from tight and focus bass to big, fat, mid-60's American style lows with lots of play in between the extremes.

As with all Dr Z amplifiers touch sensitivity is outstanding and allows the player to dial up the amp to easily straddle the fence between sparkly cleans to moderate gain tones which you can access via your guitars volume control and/or pickup selector switch and pick attack.

Also available as a 112 or 210 combo with Brake-Lite attenuator pre-installed.

112 combo $2199.00
210 combo $2199.00

Add a Brake-Lite for $149.00 for total volume control in *any* situation.

By combining a slightly tweaked version of the preamp from the venerable Dr Z MAZ 18, the world's best selling boutique amp of all time, to an all new, 20/40 watt, 6V6 power section, the best Reverb yet from Dr Z, an incredible Tremolo circuit and Z's own half power mode this amp is the culmination of everything Z has learned about building world class, hand-wired amplifiers in his 25+ years as an amp builder.

Sounds from the MAZ 18 Non-Reverb 112 and 210 Combos. A Fat Sound Guitars Original since 2002

Another Fat Sound request, the Non-Reverb variant of the MAZ 18 Junior was released in 2002 and was our exclusive model for nearly 2 years after I asked Mike Zaite to remove the reverb from an existing model to see what difference simplifying the circuit would make. What we found was that by removing the extra circuitry required for the reverb, which includes padding the preamp voltage down before it enters the reverb circuit and then re-boosting it to send it to the power section, the amp opened up, had increased gain available a bit more low end and was quieter. Dr Z added a standard FX loop to the NR version so that when you really need reverb you can get it via any number of great off board units available today.

Originally dubbed the "Stu Don't Surf" model, The MAZ 18 NR remains our best selling amplifier of all time and it's one of my primary reference amps.

The dynamic range of this amplifier, which is addressable simply by changing attack or guitar, without ever touching the amp's controls is a huge part of why it has been our best seller for so many years. This comes in very handy for live players!

Our best selling amplifier since 2002.

For the three audio clips the amp's settings were never changed. Clip #1 shows what you can do with a Strat even when the amp's Volume (Gain) is on "10" with a lighter attack. Clip #2 shows what is capable with the same settings and the same Strat, but with a much more aggressive attack while Clip #3 shows, yet again, the amp's capabilities with the same exact settings, but this time with a PRS SC245 and a heavy attack.

Options

  • Tolex: Blond, Red or Black

  • Hardwood Front Panel in light or dark stained curly maple or mahogany $249.00
  • Celestion Blue $189.00 (Celestion G12H30 is standard)

The G12H30 is the more versatile of the two speaker choices with more headroom a slightly creamier top end and more bass, but the Blue does take the amp slightly more in the Vox direction with an earlier, reedy breakup and gorgeous mids.

The 112 versions has slightly more crunch in general versus the creamier overdrive of the 210.

MAZ 18 Junior 112 non-reverb model a.k.a. "Stu Don't Surf". Originally Built by Dr Z at my request.

The non-reverb models have a bit less compression and a tad more gain than the reverb model due to the decrease in signal path length.

Finding the reverb somewhat unnecessary in this model due to its extremely rich and incredibly dimensional tone, I figured it would be nice to offer the wonderful tone of the MAZ 18 Junior at a slightly lower price point for like minded people who care little about reverb on Class A amps that have enough natural dimension on their own.

This amp includes a very effective fx loop when ambiance effects such as delay or reverb are needed. The fx loop is a $90.00 upcharge on the reverb models...BONUS!

Comments from owners

"Stu, the 2x10 Maz 18 Non-Reverb I just bought along with the Butler Tube Driver completely solved my volume issues where we practice. Don't
know what is the secret ingredient, but the combination with a Les Paul was amazing. Glad I picked it up."

 "Fat Sound,

You guys got it right on Z's Maz 18 210 NR combo. Killer amp tone with nice overdrive tones when you want it! I've been playing for twenty-five years and have finally found an amp. manufacturer that builds the best for the buck. I was skeptical about a non-reverb until I played the first two chords. These 18 watts are bigger than most think and if need be I don't have a problem with being mic'd in the mains.

Thanks for supporting quality."

"I finally got the sound of a Tweed Super out of my head and into an amp.......and then some!"

-Mike Zaite, owner, designer, Dr Z Amplification

Fat Sounds' Take

The Galaxie is a relatively radical departure for Dr Z Amplifiers on a few levels, but more of the same on a couple levels.

This amp features the newly available Triad transformer as used on the original Tweed Super and Pro amplifiers. The Triad used in conjunction with dual GT-6L6GE power tubes and three 12AX7 preamp tubes creates clean tones that are amazingly pristine, shimmery and sweet and very reminiscent of an early tweed design, but with a greater degree of refinement and an extremely tight and focused low end. When pushed hard the clean channel slowly morphs into a more modern sounding pushed clean with the characteristics that today's players have come to expect from modern, boutique designs. In other words, no mush in the low end and a fluid, smooth top end with a hint of growl and wonderfully touch sensitive dynamics.

This was the first time we had ever heard truly Fender style cleans from a Dr Z amplifier.

In attempting to solve the age old Fender problem of a flabby low end at volume, most amp designers tend to remove some of their amplifiers low mids. This tightens up the amp, but unfortunately also tends to create a more sterile tone without the bubbly percussiveness that is part of what makes the original Fenders so much fun to play and so sweet sounding.

The clean channel of the Galaxie has no such compromises. You get all the reedy, sweet, percussiveness and shimmery clean of a Classic Fender *and* a tight, focused low end.

The second channel is a major revelation for anyone who has desired a refined and smooth yet properly aggressive British style gain tone from a Dr Z amplifier and have either found his previous offerings not quite gainy enough or a bit too hard/revealing in the upper midrange. The gain channel of the Galaxie offers simply awesome gain tones that sing and sustain for days with the perfect amount of mid content to sit nicely in a mix, a rock-n-roll style aggression in the top end without a trace of harshness or buzz and a low end wallop that you can feel in your chest with every low note played.

Overall the gain channel offers the most overdrive ever from a Dr Z. It is tight, focused, singing and smooth with effortless pinch harmonics and a 3-D complexity that is simply amazing.

The Galaxie has a single 8 ohm output as dictated by the vintage American style Triad transformer, an external speaker output and a very useable triode/pentode switch which can either be set to triode to emphasize the amp's vintage leanings or to pentode to make the amp slightly tighter, more open and focused. A single button footswitch for changing channels is also included.

So what's this about "more of the same"? Well......for starters all of this new Dr Z goodness at a price point that even a working musician can afford. The amp has typical Dr Z construction which means it will last for decades with Swiss watch reliability for even the hardest working musicians and, Like all Dr Z amps, it won't require an EE degree to operate. The amps simple interface consists of nothing more than a shared presence, bass and treble control and a single volume control for each channel. I found zero compromises with the shared EQ arrangements. When the clean channel was dialed in for the perfect tone with a given guitar, the gain channel was likewise ideally EQ'd. It was also easy to get the proper volume/gain balance between the two channels.

For any player who has wanted an ultimate dual channel amp with sweet Fender 50's clean tones on one channel and modified British gain on the second in an easy to dial in, beautifully built and affordable package........you may have just found amp Nirvana!

Sounds from the EZG-50 Reverb Head

The EZG-50 head offers 50 watts of the definitive American 6L6 clean tone, but in an amp also capabale of tremendous levels of gain.

The low end is enormous.....bigger than in any previous Dr Z design and can be dialed in for the big legged lows made famous by the venerable Black face amps or can be shut down when bass is at zero for a tighter, more focused low end more in line with what you'll need for the amps higher gain tones.

The EZG-50 is an amp that truly morphs from big, bold American cleans to hotrod British style flavors, but with a denser, more creamy low to mid midrange structure.

The design of the EZG-50 includes a new 6L6 specific transformer designed for Dr Z Amps by Ken Fischer.

NOS Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors are used throughout the amplifier in all critical tone positions. These classic resistors add a beautiful warmth and depth to the overall tone of the amp.

The EZG-50 also offers an all tube, two knob reverb circuit with Depth and Mix controls allowing you to take the amp from bone dry in it's higher gain settings to Black Face lush to Fender stand alone surf.

As Z himself says......"the EZG-50 is the blackface head that never was."

I would agree with that wholeheartedly!

Highly Recommended!!™

Monza Head Monza Head Monza Head Monza Head Monza Head

The new, 20 watt Dr Z Monza 110 combo is the love child of the Carmen Ghia and the Mazerati GT yet manages to find its own voice. This amazing amplifier is small in size and very reasonable in price, but offers fantastic clean tones with wonderful bloom and sustain that morph into a thick crunch. As the gain control spins clockwise you ultimately land in infinite, overdriven sustain territory with no harsh frequencies to be found anywhere along the way.

We at Fat Sound love the Mazerati GT, an amp that was initially built as a one-off for the owner of Fat Sound, but we also realized it was too loud for many of our clients.

About a year ago we started asking for an amp that was essentially a "Junior" version of the Mazerati GT and the result is the Monza.....an amp that just sings and sings with a combination of tight, punchy lows and wonderful articulation that will leave you convinced the amp is sporting a 12" speaker and twice the power despite its dimunitive size and lower volume capabilities.

This is an awesome sounding combination in a very portable package."

Hands down one of the best amps I have ever experienced. Its reputation for being loud is well deserved as it will definitely fill up a large stage or get you kicked outof the house depending on where you play, but.......the Brake-Lite attenuator works beautifully with this amp allowing you to tame it with ease.

This is amp was designed and originally intended as a one-off amp built by Z to meet a tonal need I had as a player and wasn't finding elsewhere. A run away hit at the 2007 Z-fest, Mike Zaite decided to actually build this model and make it part of the Dr Z Amplifier line.

It's an amazingly special amp design that delivers incredibly rich gain with gobs of sustain while remaining open with excellent note-to-note definition and sensitivity that allows each note to begin singing as soon as it's fretted.

Gain comes on early, but roll back the guitar's volume and the shimmery, swirly cleans are right there.

Featuring 5 watts of tone from a single EL84 and one 12AX7 this amplifier delivers classic Dr Z tone at very low levels.

If 5 watts is still too loud for your playing environment, The Good Doctor has thoughtfully included his Brake-Lite attenuator circuit for level reduction to a point where only the family dog will be able to hear just how great his little amp sounds.

Cool amp! Perfect for very small room gigs, recording and general around-the-house playing.

Dr Z tone at medium to ultra-low volumes and at a great entry level price point.

Beautifully designed stand-alone reverb unit with 6V6 power tube, 12AX7 preamp tube and 12AT7 reverb driver tube.

Dwell, Mix and Tone controls allow for near infinite tweaking of the amount, depth and shimmer of the effect.

Less sproingy than Fender's 50's Stand Alone unit and more reminiscent of a Black Face reverb design, but with more control.
