"The OD2 is a bracing experience for anyone who thinks they've seen and heard it all in boutique land" Guitar Player Magazine Nov 2010
Fat Sound's Take
Utilizing a tweaked preamp based on Joe Bonnamassa's input, the final version of the OD2, which went through a period of subtle evolution and minor tweaks, the largest of which being the change over from an EL34 power section to the current amplifier's 6L6 back end. This version, completed in early 2009, is absolutely the best OD2 that Alan Phillips of Carol-Ann Custom Amplifiers has ever built and once his dealers and fans heard this amp we asked Alan to stop right there and "call it soup"!
A quad of Tung-Sol 6L6 power tubes delivers 100 watts in Class AB.
The 6L6 based clean tones are huge, fat, full and dripping with character.....a Carol-Ann hallmark made even better by the switch from the original's EL34 power section, but the footswitchable boost mode for the clean channel of this amp delivers an extremely close aproximation of a Marshall style, moderate crunch reminiscent of an early 70's Marshall JMP MK2 about half way up, but with a smoother top and a softer, more forgiving feel.
The second channel delivers anything from a full, round sustaining mild overdrive, just beyond a pushed clean, with incredible touch sensitivity, and reediness to the searing, smooth, higher gain tone with infinite sustain that many Dumble fans tend to be big fans of. Though this is no Dumble clone rather more of an "influenced by" amplifier.
The footswitch with boost function effectively makes this a three channel amp since three perfect tones are available without any compromise. The footswitch can be ordered in one of two ways: it can add midrange for a thicker, creamier solo tone or it can add a dB boost with additional gain. This one was spec'd with our prefered mid boost which works well for taking channel 2, when dialed in for classic or modern medium to relatively high gain rock rhythm, and turning it into a solo monster while retaining excellent articulation.
While some slight tweaking will get you to the perfect sonic zone for your guitar and attack, one of the many things I love about this amp is that you can literally just set every control on it to 12:00 and you are off to the races with incredible tone in all three modes. It's amazingly simple to dial in stellar tones without spending hours or days searching for them.......a real advantage for live players, but nice even for those of us who rarely play out.

Welcome to pure tone heaven!!
The OD2 Series of amplifiers offer a superb twin channel all-tube amplifier design coupled with a hand crafted no-compromise build quality.
These amplifiers are one of the most sonically versatile available on the market today and are happy producing every possible style of music from Country to Metal !! The clean channel features the warmest tones available with a beautiful percussive attack. The Overdrive Channel is simply incredible with a harmonic balance that gives the amplifier a three dimensional feel, rarely experienced with any standard design. The amount of overdrive is variable from slight crunch to all out sweetly compressed high gain tone. Note separation and response remain true throughout the full range of gain settings.
Bright Switch: Acts rather like a Fender Twin bright switch and effects both channels.
Shift Switch: Changes the Range and action of the Bass Middle and Treble controls on the clean channel. In the up position it is very percussive and a little more gainy. In the down position it is more blackface American.

From November 2010 Guitar Player Magazine
"I found the OD-2 to be a poweful performer at all settings. Channel A was bold and clear, with excellent body and definition and a fine clean response by any standards. Channel B, however, got me far more hot and bothered. According to your blend of Pre-Gain, Drive and Master settings, this second channel issues exceedingly smooth, creamy lead tones with outstanding dynamics and impressive note definition within chords. And Phillips' build quality keeps it exceptionally quiet even when cranked. Wind up the Drive, hit the Boost footswitch and use your guitar's volume to segue seamlessly from crunching power chords to singing, sustain-all-day solo lines with a rare, sweetly vocal quality that makes you want to just keep playing. And to sweeten the pot, you can achieve these tones at virtually any volume, thanks to one of the more effective dual Master Volumes circuits I have encountered.
A welcome addition to the limited market of hand-built, high-gain guitar amplifiers, the Carol-Ann OD-2 is bound to be a bracing experience for anyone who thinks they've seen and heard it all in boutique land."

"Hey Alan (Alan-Phillips, Carol-Ann Amplification),
The cab arrived in good shape and I've finally had a chance to try out the new OD2 50. Beautiful sounding amp--and you're right, it's absolutely huge for a 1x12. Perfectly touch sensitive and sparkly in the clean channel--in fact, I've hardly tried the overdrive channel as I've been so taken by the clean sounds. The amp really loves analog
delay, trem pedal, and outboard tube reverb in the effects loop (and it stays quiet).
The OD2-50 does a clean sound better than any of my current or past Fender tube amps. Each note arrives with so much character that the amp actually makes you want to play fewer notes since each one is just so worth savoring. I also find that the touch sensitivity is so nice that I'm palming the pick a bit more than usual to play with fingers only, because the OD2-50 produces such harmonically rich, beautifully textured, fleshy tones. It's hard to articulate these things, but you get the idea.
I love it.
Thanks for your good work (and thanks also to Stu at Fatsound for putting this together)!
Best,"
