Carol-Ann

The name Dumble gets thrown around a lot these days; too much really. Most "Dumble" style amps I've played were over-priced, overly complicated and, while perhaps pretty good sounding, lacked the feel, nuance and organic nature of any real Dumble amp I've ever played.

I had basically just about given up on finding an amp with Dumble-esque qualities to offer my clients until a local customer and friend stopped by the shop with an amp built by a British amp designer in the North East named Alan Phillips. Within 45 minutes I knew that Alan's Carol-Ann amplifiers were The Amps I'd been looking for to fill this gap in the Fat Sound lineup and to offer to my clients seeking this, much revered, tone. The newest versions of the OD2 feature either a pair or quad of 6L6 power tubes and a preamp that was tweaked to meet the sonic requirements of Joe Bonamassa.

With enormous, rich, full cleans on CH A and creamy, infinite, defined sustain on CH B as well as some wonderful in-between tones the Carol-Ann OD2 amplifiers are the only amplifiers I have played that I can honestly say remind me of a Dumble in both sound *and* feel.

Easy to dial up, consistently great sounding from day to day, beautifully constructed and reasonably priced this is the amp line to look at to satisfy your Dumble jones.

Utilizing a tweaked preamp based on Bonnamassa's input, this Carol-Ann sounds like no other and is, in fact, the best I have heard.

A pair of Tung-Sol 6L6 power tubes delivers 50 watts in Class AB.

The clean tones are huge, fat, full and dripping with character.....a Carol-Ann hallmark, but the footswitchable boost mode for the clean channel of this amp delivers perfect Marshall style crunch reminiscent of an early 70's Marshall JMP MK2, but with a smoother top and upper mids and a bit more gain if desired.

The second channel delivers anything from a full, round sustaining mild overdrive with incredible touch sensitivity, and reediness to a searing, smooth, higher gain tone with infinite sustain.

The footswitch with boost function effectively makes this a three channel amp since three perfect tones are available without any compromise. The footswitch can be ordered in one of two ways: it can add midrange for a thicker, creamier solo tone or it can add a dB boost with additional gain.

While some slight tweaking will get you to the perfect sonic zone for your guitar and attack, one of the many things I love about this amp is that you can literally just set every control on it to 12:00 and you are off to the races with incredible tone in all three modes. It's amazingly simple to dial in stellar tones without spending hours or days searching for them.......a real advantage for live players, but nice even for those of us who rarely play out.

Priced at $400.00 below the old price for an OD2 due to increases in productivity and growing purchasing power, this amp is a great value.

From Carol Ann's website regarding the base OD2:

Welcome to pure tone heaven!!

The OD2 Series of amplifiers offer a superb twin channel all-tube amplifier design coupled with a hand crafted no-compromise build quality.

These amplifiers are one of the most sonically versatile available on the market today and are happy producing every possible style of music from Country to Metal !! The clean channel features the warmest tones available with a beautiful percussive attack. The Overdrive Channel is simply incredible with a harmonic balance that gives the amplifier a three dimensional feel, rarely experienced with any standard design. The amount of overdrive is variable from slight crunch to all out sweetly compressed high gain tone. Note separation and response remain true throughout the full range of gain settings.

Bright Switch: Acts rather like a Fender Twin bright switch. Affects both channels.

Shift Switch: Changes the Range and action of the Bass Middle and Treble controls on the clean channel. In the up position it is very percussive and a little more gainy. In the down position it is more Fenderish.

  • Pre-Gain: This sets the overall input gain for the amp. This affects both channels.

Customer Comments

"Hey Alan (Alan-Phillips, Carol-Ann Amplification),

The cab arrived in good shape and I've finally had a chance to try out the new OD2 50. Beautiful sounding amp--and you're right, it's absolutely huge for a 1x12. Perfectly touch sensitive and sparkly in the clean channel--in fact, I've hardly tried the overdrive channel as I've been so taken by the clean sounds. The amp really loves analog
delay, trem pedal, and outboard tube reverb in the effects loop (and it stays quiet).

The OD2-50 does a clean sound better than any of my current or past Fender tube amps. Each note arrives with so much character that the amp actually makes you want to play fewer notes since each one is just so worth savoring. I also find that the touch sensitivity is so nice that I'm palming the pick a bit more than usual to play with fingers only, because the OD2-50 produces such harmonically rich, beautifully textured, fleshy tones. It's hard to articulate these things, but you get the idea.

I love it.

Thanks for your good work (and thanks also to Stu at Fatsound for putting this together)!

Best,"

Mike L.

From Carol-Ann's Alan Philips:

"This amp is our idea for a true rock amp that is capable of reproducing both timeless classic rock tones and modern, more high gain, tones. Think of it as a modern day 'Jubilee' inspired amp with a ton of refinement.

The unique gain structure helps preserve the dynamic range, keeps noise to a minimum and emphasize the harmonic content of each note without ever sounding bright or harsh.

I like to think of it as producing tones that have more a JMP / TW flavor, but with the same excellent master volume circuit used in the OD2 and Tucana amps and a tight but crushing low end.

The tones controls are very effective and the center points of each one perfect for the exact frequency bands that will push the amp through any mix.

Basically, the concept was for me to produce an amp that would reproduce my favorite modded rock amp tones."
