The Stone Pony has 65's "Bump" front-end but runs on 7591's like the old Ampegs from the 60's. They have a very unique and cool sound. 65 Amps design team have been wanting to do this amp ever since the LOndon was first released.
The transformers have been optimized for 7591's by working closely with Mercury Magnetics and have nailed the old 7591 format only with a much enhanced vocablulary. It has a very pleasant and pronounced mid-range notch that is instantly recognizable and VERY friendly!
The Stone Pony includes 65's ingenious "Master Voltage" knob that will reduce the B+ voltage and output in the amp in a unique way. It's unique in that it keeps the internal tube relationships perfect while keeping the filament voltage up. After seeing all other power schemes' shortcomings, 65 came at this from a different angle and we're very pleased with the results. You can dial this amp down to 3 watts output WITHOUT losing tone, feel, vocabulary, authority, etc.

"The classic 7591 heads of the 60's (i.e., Ampegs) always had a gorgeous low end to them. Big like an EL34, but with more of the piano-like quality of a 6L6 and smoother in the top end like a 6CA4.
However, I always found the mids to be slightly hard and airless. The first thing that struck me when I plugged into the Stone Pony was that it had the low end of the Ampegs but an extremely swirly quality to the mids that I would normally attribute to a 6L6 amp.
The mids to me are always where the charm comes into the tone. It's the hair around the note and the thing that your ears ultimately find the most pleasing or displeasing depending on the character. It's where the overtones come in and it's where the feedback swells and becomes a tool.
Normally I have to sacrifice a little low end and top end to get into the pleasing range in the mids that really bring out the character of the amp, but in the case of the Stone Pony I get it all. It's balanced from top to bottom, making it an amazing amp for rhythm tones with any guitar, single coil or humbucking.
Though not a 2 channel amp per se, the bump function allows me to dial in a great footswitchable lead tone, slightly more aggressive and at the volume level of my choosing, that cuts right through the center of a band. With the Master Voltage control, you can dial in the amp exactly how you like it, dial back the volume when the sound man yells at your for being too loud, and your tone is where you started.....everyone is happy.
Tremendous versatility and a character all its own....a great amp for live or studio work."
