C.F. Martin
Martin Guitars hold a special place in my heart. My earliest memories are of my Dad playing his '41 00-18. He never really progressed beyond open chords and the pentatonic scale which he dabbled with for a little fill here and there, but nonetheless he greatly enjoyed playing. He entertained the family some evenings by playing and singing folks songs from a hand-written collection of lyrics with chord changes that he kept in a 3 ring binder. By age 5 my parents had purchased a nylon string guitar for me to play and shortly thereafter he and i became a duet!
The time he and I spent playing together are some of the most cherished memories from my childhood.
My Dad's best friend, Al White, was a far more accomplished picker and would come over a couple of times a month for picking sessions in our living room. His guitar was a stunning, late-60's Martin D-45. I remember my Dad telling me that when I could afford to buy a Martin of my own I should buy a Dread rather than a Parlor like his 00 because Al's guitar was so much louder than his! Of course, we've learned allot about guitars since then and understand how certain models are more appropriate than others based on more than just volume.
